Cute gift

I got this for my wife as a gift on Valentine's Day (though not all she got). It was very cute and she enjoyed it even more than I expected. I guess it's basically formatted like a children's book, but cute. It begins with "Me without you is like...", the next page is "... sky without blue", and then every following page has some other little rhyming comparison, such as "hair without do", "ghost without boo", "kung without fu", etc., and just keeps going on and on like that for every page, each with a little illustration.

I bought this book for my boyfriend for Valentines day. Its really long and my favorite references were the Doctor Who ones and the Harry Potter ones! Its just a really cute and simple way to say when we're not together I'm not complete!

This is a great little book that works as a perfect gift or reminder to tell someone you care about them. The illustrations are cute and every page rhymes. I gave it as a gift to my girlfriend and she loves it. It's something we'll keep out, lying around for a quick glance when we need a pick me up.

Cuts to the chase, goes right to winning methods. Explains in detail how to buy, sell, and exit. Not much theory, every page has useful information, plus it comes with a dvd. I started to apply his methods within a few days. Even if you just use it for buy and sell timing, it will save you money. The core investing section is something every buy and hold person needs.

The book arrived promptly in perfect condition. I like the style of Oliver Velez. He explains concise trading setups with clear examples. The summary sections can be used to create or add to your trading plan. The DVD was somewhat dissapointing in that the camera shots of the screen he was using during a live presentation was washed out, however The initial closeup shots of the screen were clear.

Most trading books tell you how to recognise/identify patterns - but you dont really get clear guidance on entry and exit points. This book is different - you get step by step instructions on how to execute trades based on each of the methods taught.

I have tried each of the methods taught and have been most impressed by the Guerilla tactics - it has a v high probability of success even in the current market environment...

Coolest contraptions

My son got these books, and my house has the niftiest assortment of tooth-pick shooting cross-bows, skewer shooting devices, etc. Many of them work quite well.

My son finished a bow made from plasticware, and loaded a shish-kabob stick into it, and aimed into the next room: the "arrow" flew great, then I heard the "thunck". I said, "did that stick into the wall?" He said "yeah." I said, "cool, now make yourself a target, unless you want to learn how to paint too."

Where was this when I was growing up (maybe I never did) This book is as good and I would even say better than the early ones. A must for the little kid in an adult body to build your own toys to pick on your friends and family come on that is what I call a heaven sent book

Child, whose stand-alone novels generally are not quite as good as the series novels he cowrites with Douglas Preston, turns the tables here, setting his hook in the first couple of pages and slowly reeling the reader in. The prose may be a tad rough, but the story is imaginative and filled with wonder. Lovers of deep-sea adventure (and in particular fans of the James Cameron movie The Abyss or Michael Crichton's novel Sphere, 1987) will want to plunge into this one. David Pitt

A Good Premise that never becomes a Great Story

Deep Storm shares some plot elements with Michael Creighton's book SHPERE. Both are about persons who are selected for their particular expertise and sent to a deep sea discovery which you very quickly realize is something much stranger than what you are first told. Without giving away the story, the writing is good throughout and well-researched in its science and technical aspects, but I read through scenes of action and pages of dialogue that seemed intended to create tension, but never obtained. It is a "page-turner" only in the sense that you are waiting for something to happen that you did not already suspect. Perhaps the premise was just not strong enough to create that kind of suspense. And when you have characters with names like Admiral Ulysses Spartan you begin to wonder how seriously you are supposed to take it anyway.

Not Deep Enough

I admit to being captured by this book before I even started reading it. Any hint of 'Atlantis' does that to me. Alas, that fascination soon turned to boring doldrums and I couldn't wait to be finished with it, finally not even caring what the great mystery was.

Dr. Peter Crane is called to a highly secretive sub-oceanic research facility because of mysterious illnesses that have been reported. What is causing the illnesses is a mystery that Dr. Crane seems ideally suited to solve. Unfortunately, it takes him nearly the entire book to figure out what is going on, long after the reader ceases to care. Reading that far in felt like walking uphill and it just never got any better. This book was apparently a sequel to another book in which Dr. Crane solved the case and saved the world.

The book is a mixture of medical, military and scientific thriller--maybe that's why I just didn't understand most of what was going on? Perhaps you have to be in one of those careers--(I'm trying to give the book the benefit of some doubt!)

This book just wasn't as good as all the hype on the jacket cover and I felt like I'd been taken. It was my first and last experience with this author. The ending was by far the best part. It was a horrifying and thrilling conclusion-I just wish it had come sooner in the page count!

Awesome

I enjoy all Preston/Child books without exception, and this solo Lincoln Child book was no exception! I loved it! The plot, which takes a while to really reveal its true nature, is a mystery with a science fiction twist, wrapped in a psychological thriller. The masterfully told story kept me guessing up to its exhilarating climax until I was left to ponder the final words. Like most good science fiction, there is no reason to believe the events and tech postulated could not be real.

Below par in application and theory

Here's this book in a nutshell. "It tries to cover forecasting techniques theories while using a basic tool like excel, but in doing so it doesnt do justice to either theory OR excel".

The book is "ok" until simple linear regression, and after that it does no justice to theory and barely uses any excel. To give an example, I didnt see any excel based examples for multiple regression even though ANOVA is a feature under data analysis in excel and ANOVA was covered by the author (at least in theory) ... net, the author fails in application and even the theory was under par.

I was reading this book to decide if it can be recommended for a small business owner who may not have the budget for expensive analytical tools such as SAS or SPSS. If you are building your forecast based on time series analysis, then this book may have some value to offer ... but if you are looking to forecast based on independent variables other than time, then you've got to look elsewhere.

This is a good book to help forecasters learn the very basics of the skill in excel. However, I was looking for a more in-depth explanation of the box-Jenkins forecasting method ARIMA process. Specifically, how to construct an MA(1), MA(2),... The book did not meet my expectations.

Make Me Great

For a book written by the author when in his 30s (I may be off by a few years), this is incredible. First, because Churchill himself wrote it, and not some professional writer. Second, because of the extreme detail, which suggests either an incredible memory, or a willingness to make up finely constructed overlays of fiction. Maybe this is a little of both. Churchill either covers his tracks well, or presents the facts very pleasantly.
His mom ignores him and his dad holds about 3 substantive conversations with him. In return, he idolizes and idealizes both, consoling himself by getting in trouble at school, and playing army at home. Like a latter-day Peter the Great, his childhood army games lay a foundation for adult army leadership, although Churchill stays more constrained than the despotic Russian. He maintains, however, a raw animal side to his spirit which stays intact his whole life, resulting, in one memorable event about 40 or 45 years after this book cuts off with Churchill's marriage, where Churchill pauses on an inspection of a European battlefield after the defeat of Germany to urinate on the famed "Siegfried Line" in front of a group of military dignitaries. Naughty boy to the end.
Churchill convincingly puts himself back into young boy mode and preserves for us portraits of his nurse, Mrs. Everest, the hatefulness of boarding school, and the release of achieving self-actualization in the form of military school at Sandhurst, and then a whirlwind of military adventures on several continents, arranged mostly by his influential and adulterous mother. Not much adultery here, but William Manchester goes through it in detail in his first of the two-volume set "The Last Lion." Churchill never criticizes his mother; he just takes maximum advantage of her contacts.
In a double inversion of himself as the subject, this is a great summary of how Churchill decided to become a great man by first getting noticed in the middle of adventures, and writing about them during and afterwards. Plus getting paid for the writing to support himself on a scale correlative to other British subjects who either inherited it, or made it big in business. But it was all substrate for his political ambitions.
Teddy Roosevelt thought Churchill was a "show off." Which is probably true, and which comes out clearly in the video-ization of this book, under the name of "Young Winston." But he seems to have been a lovable showoff, and if Kennedy had not intervened, American political aspirants may instead be more self-consiously modeling themselves on Young Winston.
One problem: John Churchill had no male offspring, according to the family tree Winston added to his biography of Marlborough. No problem, just call yourself a Churchill, not a "Spencer-Churchill" or even a "Spencer" and just go to market as a Churchill. Plus make yourself great. He definitely did, and this book records what it also produces.

A very entertaining read

This is a very interesting, fast-paced book that provides a good introduction to Winston Churchill. Indeed, after reading this I was compelled to read "The Unruly Giant", which is a very solid biography recently written by Norman Rose giving further insight into this fascinating historical charactor.
I agree with the other reviewer in saying that Churchill provides an amazing amount of detail about the early exploits of his life, leading one to wonder just how much of it really happpened and how much he chose to embellish when writing this book some years later. Also, Churchill's constant references to contemporary events are sometimes confusing and frustrating unless one knows a lot of the history of the British empire and its political scene during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
None the less, it is a good book to start with if one wishes to learn about one of the 20th century's truly great men.

The longest walk

It's an insult to Doris Pilkington and to the children's endeavour alike to race through this book. Still, circumstances dictated [the film was waiting] and the deed was done. Which merely led to a re-read. This real-life story of three young girls escaping from the looming slavery of a Christian mission to return home is another entry on the balance sheet of imperialism. With immense forces arrayed against them, the three evaded all pursuit, even expert Aborigine trackers, to cross half a continent to rejoin their families. The distance covered was likely the longest walk in Australian history.
The roots of this story lie in the opening chapters which recount the actions of European visitors and settlers against the indigenous Australian population. Women were raped, murdered or abandoned. Men were killed, imprisoned, led into slavery as they watched their traditional lands overrun by cattle, sheep or grain. The ease with which firearms overcame spears added to the European's attitude of "superiority". By the time of Molly Craig's capture, killing had been mostly abandoned in favour of "assimilation" - a mild word for indentured servitude. Molly, recognised the fallacy of being forced into an unwanted life. She took steps to avoid this fate - many steps, as it turned out. Enough to hide from pursuers, do some elusive backtracking and arrive at home. At least 1800 km of mostly barefoot walking.
There were adventures enough along the way, and some ironies. Although alerted to their escape, the wives of white selectors fed, clothed and sheltered them briefly. Then dobbed them in to the police after the trio had again gone bush. The girls lived on donated food, captured rabbits, birds' eggs or whatever else the bush provided. Each contributed as best they could. It was enough. Seven weeks after their escape, two of the three were reunited with family. Yet, nine years later, Molly Craig, this time carrying her infant daughter, had to repeat her incredible performance.
To those complaining the book is too brief, one can only ask: "What would you add?". This is an Aborigine tale told in an Aborigine manner. It doesn't examine the lives and motivations of such people as A. O. Neville or Const. Rigg. It doesn't delve into the psychological foundations of Molly or Gracie or even Mrs Flanagan. The book presents the tale as it occurred without ostentation or enhancement. There are numerous works on the conquest of Australia and its "White Only" policy and its implications. If you are interested in what happens to native or aboriginal peoples when whites try to incorporate them into a white culturally based society, READ THIS BOOK! The book is 10x better than the movie...full of real details. Even though this story was told orally from a vantage point of 60+ years, it is backed up with articles, poice reports,etc. Very credible and tragic story.

Remarkable and True

This is a truely moving novel and all the more so because it is true. Set in the 1930's it is a story of three aboriginal girls who were forcably taken from there families in the desert of western australia and put in a native settlement to be trained in the ways of 'white' society.
The way aboriginals were treated was apauling and it is one of australias darkest secrets refered to now as the 'stolen generation'.
Molly who is fourteen leads her two sisters in an escape and journeys something like 2400km across the australian desert, amazing by anyones standards but these are children.
they are pursued by trackers and search planes, and walk until they reach the rabbit proof fence. A fence that crosses australia from north to south and will lead these three determined children home.
