Fun and Informative!

I obtained this book by a fortunate accident - I use it constantly as a reference and, sometimes when I just need to read an interesting anecdote written by somebody who loves not only food, but all that surrounds it.
Pierre Franey does not talk down to his reader, but he does teach.
One of my favorite passages from his book is: "When I have been asked over the years the most basic thing an aspiring cook could be taught, the answer is almost invariable. If you learn a few baic techniques of cookery, the rest is applied logic. If you can make a basic mayonnaise, for example, you can make a sauce remoulade or a sauce tartare with the simple additions of a few ingredients such as choped anchovy, capers, pickles and so on."
I depend on Pierre, not only for his skill as a teacher, but just as much so for his ability to inspire.
I highly recommend this book for the busy professional who desires to make their house a home.

Invaluable

I was surprised to see this classic cookbook so far down the popularity list. Checking our kitchen bookcase, where I keep the dozen or so cookbooks I use most often, I found that the copyright date on my hardback was 1981. Well, twenty-two years later, I no longer refer to it weekly because I have learned so much of it by heart, but I certainly use it monthly, and still find it invaluable.
More 60-Minute Gourmet, like its companion volume 60-Minute Gourmet, is a collection of weekly "60-Minute Gourmet" columns published in the New York Times during the 1970s and early 1980s. The recipes comprise a wide variety of cuisines and are uniformly quick and uniformly light (a handful of recipes call for heavy cream, but it can almost always be dispensed with). The ingredients and techniques still work well today - perhaps not the "cutting edge" dishes and presentations one might expect from, say, a Roy Yamaguchi, but mastering the 60-Minute Gourmet recipes will make you capable of cooking almost anything. Consider these as high-quality building blocks for creating your own brand of gourmet cuisine at home.
Keep an eye peeled for the late M. Franey's out-of-print volumes as well. They, too, remain fresh and tasty.

Historically Correct

I am a Pamunkey Indian and I wish to commend Ms. Graham for her research and correct use of the Tribe in her book. This is the ONLY book I have ever seen that uses the Tribe name and the history of our people. We are the forgotten tribe. I love to read historical romances and this is one of the best I have ever read. I had to buy the book again as my last copy began to fall apart from my constant rereading of it.

A nostalgic disappointment.

I read this for the first time as a teenager--pilfered it from the paperbacks section of the library, actually. As a hormone-ruled young man confused about his sexuality and fascinated by the dangerous sensuality of Jamie Cameron, I really enjoyed the book as a teen. Now, over a decade later, I picked up a new copy of the book and found myself shaking my head in annoyance over the same character I'd found so fascinating. Overall the story lacks in many areas, but it's the relationship between Jassy and Jamie that baffles me. Their conversations are unrealistic (and that's after the typical suspension of disbelief one wields when diving into historical romance) and utterly lacking in any flow or chemistry, and Jamie is pointlessly cruel and stubborn in ways that do nothing to flesh out his character. You don't expect romance-novel males to be realistic; that's part of the fun. They're a fantasy. I just can't imagine Jamie Cameron as anyone's ideal fantasy, when he offers very little to make him sympathetic--and very little to make him believably strong and powerful other than his own wanking on about how he takes what he wants and does what he wants. Any compassion or kindness that he shows in an effort to make him sympathetic to the reader just comes off as a sneering, smirking game to toy with Jassy even more. He displays little to no remorse when it's demonstrated that his treatment of her, in many cases, is wholly unjustified. The part near the end, after the (SPOILER) birth of their son, when things seem to be getting better until he abruptly decides to distance himself and dismiss Jassy back to England really just comes out of nowhere and seems to make little sense and have little motivation other than the author's desire to create one more rift between them that's solved by the final conflict.

I'm not a big fan of the flat, one-dimensional portrayal of characters such as Hope or Powan, either--and I'm not saying that just because I'm part Native. I'm looking at them from a professional writer's perspective, not an offended Native American's (the research put into that aspect was actually quite good, and I have to agree with the tribe member's review there). It's the characters themselves and not the depiction of their culture that lacks.

The sex is steamy, even if full of the vague euphemisms one expects. (Isn't that part of the fun of romance novels? Removing the messier, more awkward aspects of sex to focus on the better parts?) Oddly, as a boy I didn't like Jassy much. Now that I'm older I find myself enjoying her more, down to the point of feeling terrible for her after the way Jamie treated her despite the fact that she's a bit of a stubborn, stuck-up brat. I also loved Elizabeth and would have loved to see more of her character. Jassy's half-brother, on the other hand, seemed to suffer from the same melange of unnecessary cruelty and jerkishness as Jamie, while people constantly excused him for it. Yes, sometimes characters will be jerks, just as sometimes real people are jerks. But these two lacked reason and depth, and the story was presented as if their actions were supposed to make sense when, in truth, they didn't.

I'm rating this 3/5 for three reasons:

1. This book introduced me to Heather Graham, who's become one of my favorite romance novelists;
2. despite my complaining, parts of it were enjoyable (and I don't just mean the passionately depicted sex); and
3. sheer nostalgia, as despite finding more to criticize with age, this book brought back many fond memories of my youth.

Words can't describe

This was one of the first romance novels I had ever read. The first time i read it...I thought no book could ever come close. That was about 4 years ago...the other day I went back and read it again. I was expecting myself to be dissapointed...your tastes change. But the book was exactly the same. I still loved it! The characters...the settings...the story...like nothing I've ever read. I've told all my friends about this book, they all loved it. And I just had to write an online review! So if you're even slightly interested...do buy this book. You won't regret it.

Cute gift

I got this for my wife as a gift on Valentine's Day (though not all she got). It was very cute and she enjoyed it even more than I expected. I guess it's basically formatted like a children's book, but cute. It begins with "Me without you is like...", the next page is "... sky without blue", and then every following page has some other little rhyming comparison, such as "hair without do", "ghost without boo", "kung without fu", etc., and just keeps going on and on like that for every page, each with a little illustration.

I bought this book for my boyfriend for Valentines day. Its really long and my favorite references were the Doctor Who ones and the Harry Potter ones! Its just a really cute and simple way to say when we're not together I'm not complete!

This is a great little book that works as a perfect gift or reminder to tell someone you care about them. The illustrations are cute and every page rhymes. I gave it as a gift to my girlfriend and she loves it. It's something we'll keep out, lying around for a quick glance when we need a pick me up.

Cuts to the chase, goes right to winning methods. Explains in detail how to buy, sell, and exit. Not much theory, every page has useful information, plus it comes with a dvd. I started to apply his methods within a few days. Even if you just use it for buy and sell timing, it will save you money. The core investing section is something every buy and hold person needs.

The book arrived promptly in perfect condition. I like the style of Oliver Velez. He explains concise trading setups with clear examples. The summary sections can be used to create or add to your trading plan. The DVD was somewhat dissapointing in that the camera shots of the screen he was using during a live presentation was washed out, however The initial closeup shots of the screen were clear.

This is simply one of the most instructive trading books in the market!

Most trading books tell you how to recognise/identify patterns - but you dont really get clear guidance on entry and exit points. This book is different - you get step by step instructions on how to execute trades based on each of the methods taught.

I have tried each of the methods taught and have been most impressed by the Guerilla tactics - it has a v high probability of success even in the current market environment...

Coolest contraptions

My son got these books, and my house has the niftiest assortment of tooth-pick shooting cross-bows, skewer shooting devices, etc. Many of them work quite well.

My son finished a bow made from plasticware, and loaded a shish-kabob stick into it, and aimed into the next room: the "arrow" flew great, then I heard the "thunck". I said, "did that stick into the wall?" He said "yeah." I said, "cool, now make yourself a target, unless you want to learn how to paint too."

Where was this when I was growing up (maybe I never did) This book is as good and I would even say better than the early ones. A must for the little kid in an adult body to build your own toys to pick on your friends and family come on that is what I call a heaven sent book

Child, whose stand-alone novels generally are not quite as good as the series novels he cowrites with Douglas Preston, turns the tables here, setting his hook in the first couple of pages and slowly reeling the reader in. The prose may be a tad rough, but the story is imaginative and filled with wonder. Lovers of deep-sea adventure (and in particular fans of the James Cameron movie The Abyss or Michael Crichton's novel Sphere, 1987) will want to plunge into this one. David Pitt

A Good Premise that never becomes a Great Story

Deep Storm shares some plot elements with Michael Creighton's book SHPERE. Both are about persons who are selected for their particular expertise and sent to a deep sea discovery which you very quickly realize is something much stranger than what you are first told. Without giving away the story, the writing is good throughout and well-researched in its science and technical aspects, but I read through scenes of action and pages of dialogue that seemed intended to create tension, but never obtained. It is a "page-turner" only in the sense that you are waiting for something to happen that you did not already suspect. Perhaps the premise was just not strong enough to create that kind of suspense. And when you have characters with names like Admiral Ulysses Spartan you begin to wonder how seriously you are supposed to take it anyway.

Not Deep Enough

I admit to being captured by this book before I even started reading it. Any hint of 'Atlantis' does that to me. Alas, that fascination soon turned to boring doldrums and I couldn't wait to be finished with it, finally not even caring what the great mystery was.

Dr. Peter Crane is called to a highly secretive sub-oceanic research facility because of mysterious illnesses that have been reported. What is causing the illnesses is a mystery that Dr. Crane seems ideally suited to solve. Unfortunately, it takes him nearly the entire book to figure out what is going on, long after the reader ceases to care. Reading that far in felt like walking uphill and it just never got any better. This book was apparently a sequel to another book in which Dr. Crane solved the case and saved the world.

The book is a mixture of medical, military and scientific thriller--maybe that's why I just didn't understand most of what was going on? Perhaps you have to be in one of those careers--(I'm trying to give the book the benefit of some doubt!)

This book just wasn't as good as all the hype on the jacket cover and I felt like I'd been taken. It was my first and last experience with this author. The ending was by far the best part. It was a horrifying and thrilling conclusion-I just wish it had come sooner in the page count!

Awesome

I enjoy all Preston/Child books without exception, and this solo Lincoln Child book was no exception! I loved it! The plot, which takes a while to really reveal its true nature, is a mystery with a science fiction twist, wrapped in a psychological thriller. The masterfully told story kept me guessing up to its exhilarating climax until I was left to ponder the final words. Like most good science fiction, there is no reason to believe the events and tech postulated could not be real.
