WINNER OF THE 2016 ORWELL PRIZE

FINANCIAL TIMES BOOK OF THE YEAR

“Fast-paced and excellently written…much needed, dispassionate and eminently readable.” —New York Times

“Filled with sparkling prose and deep analysis.” –The Wall Street Journal

How did a country that embraced freedom and market reform 25 years ago end up as an autocratic police state bent on confrontation with America? The Invention of Russia reaches back to the dark days of the cold war to tell the story of Russia's stealthy and largely unchronicled counter revolution.

A correspondent for the Economist who grew up in Moscow, Ostrovsky astutely explains the phenomenon of Valdimir Putin - his rise and impervious longevity, his use of hybrid warfare, sophisticated disinformation campaigns, and the alarming crescendo of his military interventions. One of Putin's first acts was to reverse Gorbachev's decision to end media censorship and Ostrovsky argues that the Russian media has done more to shape the fate of the country since the collapse of the Soviet Union than its politicians. The new Russia is a cynical operation, where perpetual fear and perpetual war are fueled  by a web of lies as the media peddles myths to justify the invasion of Ukraine, cheers the bombing of Syria, and goads its new tsar to go nuclear. Putin pioneered a new and dangerously appealing form of demagogic populism --oblivious to facts and deceptively manipulative - that has now been embraced by an admiring Donald Trump.

Twenty five years after the Soviet flag came down over the Kremlin, Russia and America are again heading toward a confrontation, but this course was far froom inevitable. With this riveting and essential account of how we got there – of the many mistakes and false steps along the way – Ostrovsky emerges as Russia’s most gifted chronicler.

Review
“Anyone who has spent time in Russia over the past 30 years should be deeply grateful for Arkady Ostrovsky’s fast-paced and excellently written book. Too often, the story of post-Soviet Russia is presented through a Western prism as a clash of good Westernizers and evil reactionaries, or as a lamentation about what the West could, and should, have done once it “won” the cold war. Mr. Ostrovsky doesn’t waste time on that. A first class journalist who has spent many years covering Russia for The Financial Times and The Economist, he is also a native of the Soviet Union, with an instinctive understanding of how politics, ideas and daily life really work there…. For better or for worse, Mr. Putin has forced the world to reckon with a surly and combative Russia again. Mr. Ostrovky provides a much needed, dispassionate and eminently readable explanation of how it happened.”
– Serge Schmemann, The New York Times

“A real insiders’ story of Russia’s post–Soviet ’counterrevolution’—an important and timely book.”
—Anne Applebaum, author of Gulag

“This dazzling book flags up the conflicts over ideas, morality, and national destiny in Moscow politics from Gorbachev to Putin—a triumph of narrative skill and historical empathy based on personal experience and rigorous research.”
—Robert Service, author of Comrades! A History of World Communism

“Essential, timely, and always gripping… with the narrative flair of a true chronicler of the mysteries of the Kremlin.”
—Simon Sebag-Montefiore, author of Stalin

“How did Putinism come to pervade the psyche of the nation?… Ostrovsky’s sparkling prose and deep analysis provide a sweeping tour d’horizon of Russia’s malaise.”
– The Wall Street Journal
“Russia has always been a place where intellectuals, propagandists, viziers, and prophets have played a grand role. All the gangster-, KGB-, and oligarch-focused analyses of the country’s recent history have overlooked the men of ideas behind the tumultuous changes. Now comes Arkady Ostrovsky with a gripping intellectual history of the newspaper editors, ideologues, television gurus, and spin doctors who invented post–Soviet Russia.”
—Peter Pomerantsev, author of Nothing Is True and Everything Is Possible

“Ostrovsky is particularly good at hearing the nuances and seeing how identity, ideology and personal experience undermined hopes for democracy and reform.”
–The Washington Post
“A clear-eyed and honest account… informed, insightful and highly readable.”
–The Dallas Morning News

“Arkady Ostrovsky traces the descent from the heady days of 1991 with deep local knowledge, a journalist’s fluent style and sharp eye for detail, and wit. He places much of the blame on those who owned and dominated the media in the fifteen years after the fall of the Soviet Union.”
—Dominic Lieven, author of The End of Tsarist Russia

“For a decade Arkady Ostrovsky has been the most insightful foreign correspondent in Moscow, and in The Invention of Russia he uses his deep understanding of the country he loves to tell the gripping, tragic story of its recent history. A brilliantly original, illuminating, and essential book.”
—A. D. Miller, Booker short-listed author of Snowdrops

"A focused, bracing look at how the control of the media has helped plot the Russian political trajectory from dictatorship and back again. . . astute, accessible, and illuminating"
—Kirkus Reviews (Starred)

A Facinating Explaination as to How We Got Here
By Marcus C. Dunn
The Wall fell at the beginning of my sophomore year at Purdue. A political science student, this was an amazing time to live. My now-wife and I made it to Check Point Charlie in less-than a year - was cool to get there: celebrate, speak with my new brothers.

It was reassuring that the US government had it right and due to the strong leadership of Ronald Reagan and the reasonable gentlemen from the USSR, everything was going to work out fine.

Well folks, there is always more to the story and this book, especially the final chapters, tells a roller coaster back story that all politicos can relate to. While horrifying to me, there is an appreciable quality in recognizing the Russian struggles in their climb to democracy (Gangs of NY come to mind).

I think I'm more optimistic than the author, as I put great faith in rational actors, but as the book capably paints, these guys are all over the map!

As a first-time reader of so many Russian names and terms, the "Dramatis personæ" was greatly appreciated.

If a reprint is requested, and I hope it is, some maps and pictures would be very helpful.

Five stars because I actually finished the book.

The counter-revolution nobody saw happen
By C. Anderson
The introduction says, in short: When I took a train from Moscow to London for the first time in 1992 I was proud to be part of a great, progressive country that had made human rights its #1 priority and granted enlightened freedoms to its people. In 2016, a KGB strongman was occupying Ukraine under false pretenses, and talking flippantly about using nuclear weapons if the West interfered there or in Syria. How did we get here?
As a recent visitor to Russia, I was astounded to find that a country with a 1000 years to grow cynical about totalitarian leaders nevertheless had genuine enthusiasm for their newest Moscow strongman. This book does an exceptional job explaining how the "aggressive obedience of the Russian people" interacted with a dangerously unprepared and unregulated free-market to create the current situation; he also does an exceptional job documenting the cold-blooded manipulation of TV and murder of journalists that have protected Putin's grip on power. This is not a neutral or balanced book, but it is exceptionally well-written and the most intelligible introduction to modern Russia for westerners I've seen.

Wish there had been more
By amypersian
Initially I was unsure about how I would like this book. Previously I had never read anything with this type of format. The most interesting part of this book was that they all included the line...."I never thought I'd see you again. Surprisingly when I finished reading the collection of short stories, I found myself wishing that there had been more contributors to this book. My favorite short story was the first one written by Allison Brennan. It illustrated a complicated father daughter relationship in an adventure format.

One of my favorite aspects was the mix of genres that were included. It keeps the reader interested and also exposes them to genres that they might not ordinarily read.

Would love to read another book like this with a different line. Kudos to the publishers, The Story Plant.

Well Worth Reading Collection of Short Stories!
By Evie
I Never Thought I'd See You Again, edited by Lou Aronica, is a collection of sixteen short stories by sixteen successful writers. In the introduction Mr. Aronica reveals that the title is actually a "writing prompt" that was presented to the writers and it is used in all the stories. Each author introduces their offering and I found these to be as interesting as the stories themselves. The subject content varies from story to story and include themes of what really matters in life and death.
In Facing the Mirror, by Dianne Despain, Maggie Holmes learns she has cancer while she is an Emergency Room. Her experience is almost surreal: The physician who gives her the diagnosis has more interest in getting to a party than comforting her patient. Then there is the oncologist who after ordering tests has not gotten back in touch with her with the results after seven weeks. The author's writing is direct and poignant. When reading this well written story the reader is one with Maggie Holmes.
Fabian's Wake by Laura Resnick opens with Eileen expressing surprise and shock when her deceased father leaves his coffin during his wake. It becomes clear that she is the only one to witness this and she is the only one who can hear him speak. There is a reason for these occurrences. With wit and engaging dialogue the author has crafted a marvelous story about regrets and family.
Solomon's Paradox, by Kelly McClymer, is a story I will never forget. Ben is responsible for his best friend's death. In this mesmerizing story, atonement is offered in the form of allowing the deceased friend to return from the dead and to live in Ben's body for one year. This is their haunting tale.
All the stories in this collection leave an impression and each is worth reading.
I received this book free of charge through NetGalley and I give this review of my own free will.

an interesting book that shouldn't be missed reading
By Infantina
I never thought I'd see you is a collection of prompt short stories that tempted me a lot into reading the book last week. Due to my large TBR list I had to postpone it for the time

being. I was very desperate to read this book as the title was very intriguing and also I love short stories. The advantage of reading short stories is that if one story is bad it doesn't mean all the other stories also have to be bad and you don't have to be disappointed by the whole book.

Since all the stories were written by different authors, I had no expectations, only curious to know what I would find in the next story. It was a pleasant surprise that all the stories were well written in a manner that inspired me a lot.I can not really point out which story I liked the most. There were stories which I hadn't anticipated it to end the way it did.

The first story had so much potential of becoming into a full length novel. I would have liked the story to continue. It was about a father and a daughter relationship. All the characters were well portrayed in this particular story.

Facing the mirror was a story which seemed as if it was real. It has succeeded in delivering the anxieties and real emotions of a cancer patient. After reading it, I had a feeling that a person who is diagnosed with cancer would react the same way as Maggie did. Janet Trotstad's Christmas Eve and Peresphone's granddaugter by Alyssa day was also my favorites.

In one particular story, I lost all my patience, so I flipped through the pages to find out the ending. It was Solomon's Paradox by Kelly Mcclymer. I didn't get this story right when I initially began reading it .I have to appreciate the author for writing this extraordinary story because I found this story to be very different and very likeable.

Overall, I would say this book was interesting to read. I enjoyed reading all the stories but only half of the stories made it to my most favorite list. I don't have anything to criticize about the other half but it's just that the stories weren't impressive as I thought it would be.(3.5)

Wonderful book
By regista43
This is a very accessible and efficient anatomy book and what I would recommend first to any medical students. I find class and lab much easier if I first read the BRS book and try to get a basic overview. The biggest strength of this book is a review that helps integrate muscles, nerves, vessels, and actions, while also giving clinical correlates.

Seriously the most helpful resource I have for my anatomy class as a first year medical student. Use it in conjunction with an atlas, to have a visual guide, but the board-style questions are invaluable.

Good book

this book has great explanations. its is a very helpful addition to anatomy studying. my only complaint would be that as a review book it seems a bit more detailed than I expected. so it can be a bit overwhelming. otherwise its great!

A Secret Life: The Polish Colonel, His Covert Mission, And The Price He Paid To Save His Country, by Benjamin Weiser

In August 1972 Polish colonel Ryszard Kuklinski, frustrated by the Soviet domination of his country, took a dramatic step that endangered his own life and the security of his family. He contacted the American Embassy in Bonn and arranged a secret meeting. Over the next nine years, Kuklinski rose quickly in the Polish defense ministry, helping to prepare for a "hot war" with the West. But he also lived a double life of subterfuge-of dead drops, messages written in invisible ink, miniature cameras, and secret transmitters. In 1981, he gave the CIA the secret plans to crush Solidarity. Then, about to be discovered, he made a dangerous escape with his family to the West.

Now in paperback with a new introduction, A Secret Life is a fascinating exploration of the morally complex world of the Cold War, seen through the eyes of a great-and deeply conflicted-spy.

From Publishers Weekly
Highly placed in the military councils of the Warsaw Pact, Polish colonel Ryszard Kuklinski made himself the CIA's most important East Bloc intelligence asset in the 1970s, passing along invaluable information about Soviet weaponry, military plans and the brewing crackdown on Poland's dissident Solidarity movement. In this absorbing biography of an emblematic Cold War figure, journalist Weiser paints Kuklinski as a Polish patriot, his pro-American sentiments motivated by love of freedom, resentment of Soviet domination, and fear that a superpower confrontation would unleash a nuclear holocaust on Poland. At times Weiser goes overboard in establishing the point, reprinting at inordinate length Kuklinski's high-minded letters to his CIA handlers and their equally gushing tributes to his idealism and strength of character (the question of how much money the CIA paid Kuklinski is somewhat coyly skirted). But he gives a wonderful account of the daily routine of espionage, full of the theory and practice of counter-surveillance, dead drops, surreptitious hand-offs, suicide pills, invisible ink and (often balky) miniature transmitters, and moments of panic when Kuklinski narrowly escapes detection. Weiser also offers an unusually intimate portrait of the inner life of a spy and the intense emotional bond between agents and their handlers (after his case officer was transferred, the CIA continued to forge letters to Kuklinski over his signature to avoid upsetting their prize asset). Both a gripping spycraft procedural and a study of the moral tension of simultaneously collaborating with and undermining a system one detests, the book sheds light on a shadowy but evocative aspect of life under Communism.

From The New Yorker
Books about espionage, fiction or not, can be cliché flypaper—encrusted with tired plot twists and morbid atmosphere. Exceptions, like John le Carré's novels and Thomas Powers's histories, are rare. But Weiser's tale of how a high-ranking Polish officer, Ryszard Kuklinski, betrayed the communist leadership for almost a decade, starting in 1972, and fed the Americans thousands of pages of top-secret documents, including the plans for martial law, is in that elevated company. "A Secret Life" is thrilling not only in its chronicle of an honorable betrayal during the Cold War's endgame but also in its portrait of the strangely loving epistolary relationship between the spy and his American handlers. There are scenes here that are as tense as any in "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy," and the access that Weiser gained—his sources include both Kuklinski and the Poles he fooled—is a feat of patient and intelligent reporting.

Nice account of contemporary history
By F. J. Van Velsen
The book gives a comprehensive account of a Polish officer who played a crucial role in the cold war. The man understands that in case of a Russian attack on Western Europe for which the plans were ready and at his disposal, his own country would be devastated. He would not accept the supreme command of the Russians over the Polish troops in case of conflict and decided to inform the Americans. Nice writing and a good analasys of the moral problem: was he a traitor or a hero? Strangely the reviewers who rate the book low are people who consider the man a traitor. In my opinion the personal answer to the moral question does in no way influence the quality of the book, on the contrary!

What the book also describes painstakingly (and without any criticism) is how a CIA-officer developes what he calls a 'personal relationship' with the Pole, to whom he writes letters. As he is transferred to another section of the service, a colleague starts to write the 'personal letters', imitating the style of the Pole's "American friend". The Pole never finds out and, finding back his friend years later, considers him a real friend and the American apparently too. I found this a repelling example of ignoring the meaning of friendship, of a personality made out of plastic, but of course that does in no way hurt the quality of the book.

Reply to Voice from Poland
By A Customer
The amazing story of Colonel Kuklinski and his work on behalf of the free world and America, resulted in many laudatory comments, but also an outrageous condemnation from pro-Communist sources. The understanding of this scurrilious attack will be helped by the recollection that our gallant ally, Poland, was abandoned at Yalta to the Soviet occupation, which lasted 46 years. During this time, some Poles were seduced, or bribed, to serve their Soviet masters and their interests. When the general discontent by the majority of the people, led by Solidarity, brought about the downfall of the Communist masters and their stooges, they naturally felt hate for the freedom-seeking patriots.
The kangaroo Communist court sentenced Colonel Kuklinski to death just like they condemned so many patriots, and even the anti-German resistance fighters. To most Poles, Colonel Kuklinski is a hero and the cities of Krakow and Gdansk made him an honorary citizen. The regime henchmen could not reach the colonel but his two sons met with sudden death in suspicious circumstances in America. So he paid the highest price for his efforts on behalf of the free world and Poland.

The truth makes you free
By J. Zysk
This is a book that everyone should read, especially if you have polish roots. I was just wondering if CIA has done enough to provide the security for Kuklinski's family, I think it should be done more... All though this book answered a lot of my questions and daunts, my 14 year old son is reading it now and gives me a great pleasure to explain him those dark days of Poland and brave Polish freedom fighters. Absolutely recommend this book for every patriot.

100 Neo-Futurist Plays: From Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind (30 Plays in 60 Minutes), by The Neo-Futurists

This collection of 100 short (very short) plays from The Neo-Futurists’ acclaimed cult hit Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind was originally published by Chicago Plays in 1993. The show presents 30 plays in 60 minutes, its ensemble of writer/performers generating between two and 12 new plays each week, as dictated by a roll of the dice. The material runs the gamut of style, tone, and topic: musical, confession, agit-prop, poetic gesture, physical comedy, puppet theater, audience interrogation, folk song, sex joke, and many more. The plays are funny, moving, challenging, powerful, and occasionally just plain weird. There is no fourth wall in Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind — the show embraces the ideal that theater is created in the connection between audience and performer. Randomness, dynamism, speed, brevity, and planned obsolescence are celebrated and exploited to engage and refresh all participants. The plays stand as an entertaining document of the show's output, and they are ideal for scene study, auditions, and competitions.
