Expect the Unexpected

This is a very fun book. It's hard to put down. Genesis has had her memory wiped clean and she's groping around in the fog trying to find out who she is. Everyone else seems to know this secret and won't tell her anything they don't have to. The secret is revealed at the end of the story like a bomb dropping. I read the book a second time knowing the ending and the story really opened up. The action is going on from the beginning behind the scenes but the clues are there. Who do you think the identity of the body buried in the abandoned playground is? I have a very good theory of who it is, but I won't know for sure until the sequel comes out.... :)

Nothing as it Seems

This was a surprising read. I initially purchased it out of curiosity and then ended up enjoying the book. The plot is fast paced and has a couple points where the reader is able to come to conclusions along with Genesis. I felt connected to certain characters, particularly Genesis, who was such a strong female lead. She was refreshing in that she was not opposed to facing her darkest memories and who she used to be. I really enjoyed it.

Lots of Potential

The story is a good one and holds my interest. There are quite a few errors in the text that become somewhat annoying over time. The writing is a bit clunky and could use the help of an editor. All in all an interesting story idea and with some edits and revisions, this could be a very good read.

Professor of Information Systems and Operations Management at The University of Toledo College of Business Administration. He received his B.S. degree in Mathematics from The University of Dayton, an M.A. in Mathematics from The Catholic University of America, and his D. Sc. in Operations Research from The George Washington University. Dr. Marchal has held visiting appointments at The University of Michigan and George Mason University. He has also worked at the Executive Office of the District of Columbia government, the George Washington University Institute for Management Science, and the U.S. Army Chemical Research & Development Center.

Professor in the E. Craig Wall Sr. College of Business Administration at Coastal Carolina University. He earned his Ph.D. in Business Administration from the University of Minnesota, a M.B.A. from Oklahoma State University, a M.S. in Forest Biometrics from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, and a B.S. in Forestry from the University of Illinois. Dr. Wathen's research interests include applied statistics, teaching methods, and manufacturing and service process design. He has published articles in the International Journal of Operations and Production Management, National Productivity Review, International Journal of Service Industry Management, and the Journal of Workplace Learning: Employee Counseling Today

Adjunct professor at Coastal Carolina University. He earned his Ph.D. and an MBA from The University of Toledo and a Bachelor of Science in Business from Bowling Green State University. Dr. Lind is the co-author with the late Robert D. Mason and William G. Marchal of Statistical Techniques in Business and Economics and Basic Statistics for Business and Economics published by Irwin/McGraw-Hill and Statistics: An Introduction published by Duxbury. Easy to understand

This is a terrific book! Having no past experience with statistics, I found this book very easy to understand. I read it for my online class and I skipped maybe three chapters. If you have taken any online classes, you know that the student has to take initiative and time to learn on their own. This book made it easy! Highly recommend!

Basic knowledge every pilot should be familiar with in a very portable book

A good basic reference with some practice problems to get comfortable using the formulas provided. Great size to keep in your flight kit as a reference. I would recommend this to the pilot that is just starting out for basic concepts and rules of thumb. The USAF puts out a reference that goes into more detail (and you can get online for free) that I found more helpful in my flying as an airline pilot.

Mental Math for Pilots

Mental Math for Pilots fills a very specific niche in aviation knowledge. If it were not for the very specific math questions asked during a Major Airline interview knowledge test, the book would be almost useless. Almost every technique taught in the book is beyond what you would ever need to know or have time to figure out in the flight deck. It is the perfect book for those in the academic world that do not spend their working life in the cockpit. Furthermore, for the price of the book, the content is very limited. Explanations of problems are lacking and often times leave you wondering how the author came up with the answer from what is written. The author will give a problem and the answer, yet leave out the explanation of how to arrive at that answer.

This book was recommended to me as part of an airline prep course. It does have a lot of useful equations for both GA and airline pilots, but I never find myself using them. All the basics are contained in here (VDP, TOD, etc.) but I already knew those and I've forgotten many of the other equations from this book due to lack of use.

I wouldn't recommend it to anyone unless you really had a passion for math and calculating non-essential things in flight.

"Die weisse Rose" a powerful voice

A wonderful book. I stumbled across this when looking for materials for my senior group who'd just seen "Sophie Scholl" with me. Unfortunately so much background info currently available is either in uni level German or Wikipedia style overview. I wanted something that gave a feel of the motivations and character of the people involved. This is it.

The German is wonderfully accessible for senior groups. Written as if Inge Scholl is sitting talking to you. No heavy political discourse, more "this is how it was for us as a family". You see what happened in the 30s that steadily led the characters to the point they could take no more and had to do something other than wringing their hands on the sidelines. You see how Nazism permeated life to the point that they saw doing nothing as a betrayal of conscience.

Of the 202 pgs only the first 75 are a telling of the "weisse Rose" story till 1945. Short but very clear and readable so you get a feel of the timeline and how fast it progressed once they made the move into political action. You also get a feel of their intellect and passion, and the role of "Vater" as parent, Fuhrer, Land and God.
The sections that follow are: the eight Flugblatter fliers; the two main trials (Scholl/Probst and Schmorell/Huber/ Graf); eye witness testimonies; reactions and voices.
It's a fascinating read. Highly recommended.

A different view of Hitler's Germany

This book is a very different view of WWII. You get to see Germany from the view of young adults resisting Hitler. These people grew up in Germany following Hitler, participating in the Hitler Youth until they were old enough to realise the wrongs the Germans were doing to the world. The reading goes quickly because you become so engrossed in the story. It is a very good read, and after reading Anne Frank it makes you view the Germans differently.

Arrived earlier than expected, BUT it's listed as "English and German" I expected it to be in both English and German text.

It is only German. I studied German to a conversational level, but it was nearly 13 years ago. I am fascinated by the White Rose story. I have the documentary, both in English and German. I had hoped this book was in the original German and with an English translation alongside. I have the English translation of this edition already, but I had hoped I could read the two side by side in a single edition. I feel I was misled. Still, meh. I'm delighted to own the original German edition, written by the sister of the students of the White Rose. Four stars, for feeling misled. Otherwise, BRAVO!

The transition to working in cloth followed. The flexible property of cloth allows pleats to be folded to augment and give a dimensionality not present in a flat surface; and the translucent quality adds a unique intricacy to the geometric patterns. When lines in a pattern are folded as pleats, the resulting shapes formed by the pleats become part of the artistic expression of the material.

The possibilities for using Shadowfolds in design are limitless. Some applications take advantage of light shining through the fabric, others show the richness of the folds that have a depth all their own. About the Author
Jeffrey Rutzky has always had a passion for arts and crafts, and has integrated them with his desktop publishing skills to create unique works of art. He is also the author and designer of several papercraft books, including Kirigami Kit, TearPlanes, Jewelgami, and Bugagami. Rutzky works as an artist and graphic designer in New York City.

Chris K. Palmer is a professional artist who has been designing and folding origami since childhood. In Granada, Spain, he was inspired by the mosaic tilings of the Alhambra. Persistent effort and study of the Japanese hira-ori technique led Palmer to make the leap from paper folding to Shadowfolds. Palmer has taught art and architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology and the University of Colorado at Boulder. He now resides in California.

An easy technique that creates beautiful effects

I first encountered this sew-and-fold technique at a workshop. It was impressive. Even people who had at most a utilitarian acquaintance with needle and thread were able to create a beautiful folded pinwheel figure in the center of an organza square. I was therefore delighted when the book finally came out.

How it works:

1. Start with one of the authors' patterns of dots, transferred to a piece of fabric.

2. With needle and thread, in the order specified, pick up a few threads of the fabric in the center of each dot.

3. Pause every so often to draw the thread up tighter, smoothing and straightening the origami-like folds as they form.

4. Optionally, iron the folded figure when you're done.

That's all it takes; and if you work the project in a crisper fabric than the sample items Amazon shows as secondary images, the results are as precise as Moorish tiling patterns.

Shadowfolding! Wow!

If you like geometric patterns and you like fabric art, you will love this book. The projects are beautiful and the design options are endless. I am really inspired by what can be acheived with these fabric folding techniques. I love the dimension and texture that fabric folding adds to any project. I plan on incorporating these techniques into my art quilts. What fun!

It's "wonderfold"!!!!

I met Chris Palmer once many many years ago at an origami convention in NYC. I was in awe at that time of his beautiful paper geometric origami designs...amazing to see in person...even more amazing to see them in fabric and so marvelously presented in this book. The book itself is a work of art. AND, the projects that the authors/artists include appear to be very achievable. The technique as described looks like a most enjoyable game of "connect the dots" with a most beautiful end result. This book will appeal to origami enthusiasts and quilters or fabric artists alike. Simply "wonderfold"!
