I love Mary Berry so I am biased, but after baking and cooking from Nigella, Delia and Jamie Oliver's books it's all Mary Berry's recipes that turn exactly as they should, taste delicious and use standard ingredients that you can find in the kitchen or local super market!

Quick, easy, insightful, memorable advice we should internalize

Normally I shy away from sales pitches, buzz words, conventional wisdom summed up as a book or a teaching tool - you know, books like the Seven Habits of Highly Successful People. I've read a lot of these books (Dale Carnegie's first). I really didn't expect to like *this* book, but I do. A lot.

Anyone discouraged or contemplating suicide should read how close this man came to shooting himself and how he somehow, unexpectedly, talked himself out of it:

-- If I pull the trigger, there’s no going back. It’s over...for real. There would be no romantic ending to this decision. No Hollywood plotline. This was real life. And it was gritty and nasty.

How do we find the amazon page where readers Kindle-share quotable quotes and good ideas? If you can find mine, you'll see I excerpted a lot of lines we may all know by heart, but we need *reminders.* E.g., ' no one really knows for sure what works when it comes to achieving greatness. Even the “experts” can’t agree.' Old news. But there's "new" news, too. I'm off to google this one in a bit: "Quite literally, scientists have observed love bring dead brain matter back to life. The neurochemicals that are released in response to empathy and kindness, when sprinkled on dead brain cells, bring those cells back to life." Love inspires us, changes, makes all things possible, and Paul of the gospels isn't the first or last person to say this. You don't have to believe Jesus is God to believe that love is one of the powerful forces on earth.

No, that's not new. So what is? With this book the presentation is all. The story of the builders of the Brooklyn Bridge? A gold nugget of fascinating and inspiring historical trivia served with all the good advice.

Examples of good advice, insights, or familiar advice that bears repeating:

-- I wasn’t the only person in pain. In fact, the more I looked, the more I began to see the fear and pain and loss all around me. Broken people. Hurting people. Successful people. All looking for how to solve the problems of life and love and greatness. People you would meet at a dinner party and admire. People you would think had it all together.

-- You don’t wait for someone to trip and fall and then run to lift them up. You look around and actively encourage those who might be suffering silently.

-- A negative person is a mentally weak person. It takes no mental courage to have negative thoughts. What does take mental effort (sometimes lots of it) is to find the best in every situation.

-- There is power in being wrong. A big part of success is humility – the belief that you always have more to learn. But if you’re always right, there is never a need to learn more. Perhaps the biggest wrong is in thinking that you are always right.

-- You are today who you thought you would be. You will be in the future who you think you want to be today.

-- Stop worrying about what other people think of you. Someone else’s opinion is the number one reason you’re going to fail. Are you willing to trade your future for some idiot with a loud mouth? It’s silly how obsessed we are with what others think about us.

-- Avoid the need to blame others for anything. Mean, small-minded people know that they suck. That’s why they are so cranky and eager to point out others’ mistakes. They hope that by causing others to feel inadequate, everyone will forget about how woefully off the mark their own performance is. Don’t blame anyone, for any reason, ever. It’s a bad habit.

All these quotes are only a small percentage of what's in the book. There may be a gazillion books out there preaching the same message, but this one is a quick, easy read, packed full of good reminders to keep us from giving up.

If you want to learn the truth about success READ THIS BOOK!!!

Mr. Waldschmidt, I felt compelled to send this message and say thank you for the wonderful book. I bought Edgy Conversations and could not be more pleased with its content. I have purchased (and actually read and listened to) dozens of business and success books, tapes and CD's over the years and found them all of minimal help in the real world of business and success. When I bought your book and started to read it, I was completely astonished that someone was finally telling it like it really is in ways I had not considered. Then I took the audit, scored horribly, and read the analysis. It was very acurate in content and has facilitated a positive change in my attitude. I'm sure I will read this book many times before it hits the shelf. Thank you!

A regular motivational book and not in a great way

I thought that the motivational essays were pretty good. The book was super heavy on sports and historical metaphors. The problem is that you have a million choices of motivational books and didn't see what made this special. It was a good reminder to keep going when the going gets tough and to be positive when other lesser men would be negative but you can find that anywhere. Save your pennies and precious time for either the best of the best or for a book that teaches you some new techniques to motivate yourself when things are difficult.

This book takes a theoretical essay approach to professionalism in its attempt to mesh personal opinions with an array of information and citations that cover about half the book. The rest is a crude attempt to tie it all together; the result - the least comprehendible book I've ever had the dipleasure to read.

Mostly updates with 18 more chapters

This is simply a revamped Morgan compared to the last one. Mostly everything is in color, more bold points made throughout each chapter, but the same easy to follow layout, and more logically organized. Still missing some of the little things like where the PISS pins are located, and they took out some of the arterial line curves and some other little things that I can't remember during my speed reading of the book that irked me (just adding all the tiny details would have made it a more comprehensive book). Other than that they added a chapter on perioperative management, and a whole section on periop care (mostly reorganized chapters that already existed and added I think about 3 more), separated neurosurgery from people with neurological/psychiatric diseases, and overall added over 200 more pages. It's a good remodel, same good foundation, with some of the new medications and technological advances in the field of anesthesia. Would definitely recommend it, especially for people that like visual stimulation while they are studying.

Top notch book on thin films

My Ph.D. research was in thin films and this is the only book that I keep at my desk. I give it to the new employees that I mentor as an into to all major deposition techniques. It does need to be updated though. It does not include many of the newer techniques such a pulsed DC sputtering, cathodic arc deposition, ect. If your getting into thin films, this is an excellent into book.

Beautiful hairstyles; very difficult if you're a beginner

The hairstyles are great, don't get me wrong. There's a good mix of "trendy" and "wear-to-work." But I feel the need to warn buyers that a) this is NOT a book for beginners; and b) this ONLY has hairstyles for very long hair. If you're like me and can't french braid your own hair or have longish medium-length hair, don't waste the money. Maybe I'm just uniquely useless at hairstyling, but that's why I bought a book! The photos are close-ups so it's hard to figure out where the model is positioning her hands, and because most of them are in black and white it can be difficult to figure out the precise instructions (the photo quality could be better). I have tried several of the "easier" styles on myself (bohemian, braid-bun) with absolutely no success.

If you have long hair and already have moderate hairstyling skill, you won't go wrong. But if your hair isn't six inches past your shoulders or you're just starting to experiment with your hair and struggling, this is only going to confound you.

For those with some exisiting hair skills.

I am slightly inept when it comes to my hair. I have a lot of hair, but not a lot of skill. I was excited to try this book as (unlike many of the books I considered) most of the styles are contemporary and feminine, and most seem adaptable to curly/wavy hair (thanks, Abby!). I also appreciated the mix of casual and dressy looks. The book did meet all of those expectations! I also felt the hair care tips included in the front of the book; I like the addition of the importance of hair care and maintenance in addition to styling. I also LOVED that ALL the images are full color images. Although I love my own (and others') dark hair, I think it's a huge positive that she has light hair to model; it's a little easier to note the depth/details/layers in images of light hair. And overall, the size of the book is good. Large enough to allow good image size, but not oversized and unwieldy.

Styles are, unsurprisingly, geared toward long or medium-to-long hair. With the exception of a few images of children, the author appears to be the hair model for every style.

However, I did have to deduct a star for two (sort of three) reasons.
1.) The "Mane Reason" (my half-hearted apologies for the pun...) that I deducted the star was that this simply did not "start at the foundation" of every style. She presumes you already both know how to do a few braids and (more importantly, to me) know how to do them on your OWN head (I can French braid a friend's straight hair; however French braiding my own curly/wavy mess is way challenging). I think there should have been some space devoted particularly to those skills. As it was, I was lost time and again. Her website does help a bit with this. I would have liked TONS of tips on working with your own hair when it's hard to see what you're doing!
2.) Not every step is shown in every style. This relates to the above, but I felt it worth mentioning individually. Styles are shown One Style to a page/One Page to a Style. So, the step-by-step process seems in places to be abbreviated. Perhaps this is a moment to speak to the publisher: add a few more pages if necessary.
3.) I wish this came with spiral binding. That would make it more user friendly while styling.

A bonus I did not expect: the books does include an access code for Abby's website tutorials.

I would recommend this to anyone with a basic set of hair styling skills. Can you French Braid your own hair without cursing it? If yes, buy this book. If no, you may want to master than first. I think this is for "advanced beginners" and up. True clueless girls (like me!) will find it more challenging. If that's you, ask yourself how much effort you are willing to commit. If you're ready to apply yourself, buy it but realize you'll need to couple it with some help (from a friend or online). This book wont take you from zero.

Very few styles, not really worth the money; get The Braiding Handbook instead

Had hoped for more varieties of classic braids, not braids, variations and a bunch of twists and buns. Disappointing, thin, pamphlet-like book, not many styles for the price. Not worth the money. The Braiding Handbook is thicker, cheaper, has more styles than this. Not recommended at all.

Bar, raised! Surely a Classic

First, given his long history of publications and credibility in this area, when Roger Ulrich writes the foreword to a book, there is a pretty good chance that the book itself will be extraordinary. And Therapeutic Landscapes is extraordinary.

There is one significant detail missing from the book description above (i.e. the material lifted from the back cover) - I was very surprised to find about 300 beautiful photographs and illustrated designs (all with the exception of one or two are in full color) perfectly nestled and numerically captioned to accompany the written text. The photographs are of such high quality, and each is appropriate to the educational components being described in each chapter. There is an average of about 1 beautiful image per page, and in a book about the therapeutic value of nature and design with nature in mind, this visual is so important - the book comes alive and the material is more relevant.

The written content itself is a precise match with its description - highly researched! It was obvious before even finishing the introduction that this project involved gathering and synthesizing a tremendous amount of cutting-edge studies (as well as historical documents) from a wide variety of medico-scientific and design publications. There are many texts that have attempted the same; however Therapeutic Landscapes excels because of the way in which the information is presented -

1. Just the right amount of historical background to provide a frame of reference
2. Makes the scientific case for evidence-based design with just the right amount of depth without being too technical
3. Explores the general and specific considerations and guidelines for design
4. Each chapter is referenced - how valuable!
5. International settings are discussed in detail

The most authoritative guide out there

Being in the outdoors and the action of gardening itself can be incredibly healing to people who are recuperating from surgery or a major illness, and for their caregivers. When I was a teenager, I had multiple rounds of lung surgery, and gardening on my front porch was one of the first things that made me feel human again after being in the hospital almost constantly for over a month. I think this experience was pivotal in my decision to become a landscaper a few years later.

So it was with great interest that I picked up this book on therapeutic landscaping. The publisher and the price point should make it obvious that this isn't a book for casual readers but more a text to be used in landscape design classes, for healthcare professionals, or for anyone who may be designing an outdoor space for people to rest and recover in. That said, the text is simple and clearly laid out and you don't need any kind of architectural or professional background to derive great benefit from the practical tips, clear photos, and steady guidance within.

Though I have picked up multiple books on how to design gardens for people with disabilities, how to select tools and plants, and what to consider when creating healing gardens, this book is far and away the most authoritative and clear compendium of every consideration you will need to create a therapeutic landscape in pretty much any setting. The book covers issues of liability, signage, best practices for pathways and seating and more. In addition, there are numerous statistics in many areas were scientific research is presented that share the specific benefits of different kinds of therapeutic landscapes, which is helpful if you'd like to create a therapeutic landscape but need to win over a boss, board or committee in order to get funding or the go-ahead.

There is nothing unprofessional about this book. Though in certain circles things like art therapy, garden therapy, and therapy with pets are seen as a little soft or woo-woo, the landscapes shown as examples, the advice given, and the scientific research backing the importance of landscapes in hospital and other settings makes it impossible to dismiss these types of landscapes as being unworthy of the funding or the energy to create.

Overall, if you are in the landscape design field and see yourself designing public or commercial spaces or even just residential spaces for people who may be differently abled in some way, this is a vitally important book for you to have for your reference library and to read. Not only will you enjoy the process of learning more about the topic, but the information is top-notch and easy to find when you are embarking on relevant projects.

Well organized and comprehensive

A comprehensive review of therapeutic landscapes that explains how relevant research results can be factored into garden designs to create successful healing environments in a variety of healthcare settings. The authors describe and evaluate several existing healthcare gardens and provide practical analysis of what works and what doesn't. A must-read for anyone designing therapeutic gardens. But also a valuable resource to anyone designing or caring for gardens in that it helps them understand the benefits derived from exposure to nature. Well done!
