I use Google every day. I've been using it every day since it first launched—before it launched, actually, when it still had the word "beta" on its home page. I use Google because it's easy to use, and because it delivers quality results.

I'm not unusual, of course. Google is the most-used search site on the Web, and most people choose it for the same reason I do—ease-of-use and effectiveness. That's not news.

What is news, for a lot of users, anyway, is that Google is more than just simple search. Most users don't know that they can fine-tune their search in a number of interesting ways, or that they can use Google to find pictures and news articles and compact discs, or that they can use the Google search box to perform mathematical calculations and conversions, or that Google can function as a spell checker or dictionary.

It's also news to most users that Google offers a variety of products and services that have little or nothing to do with web search. Google runs the largest blogging community on the Web, hosts a must-see video-sharing community, distributes a top-notch picture-editing program, and provides free web-based email services. You might not get all this from looking at Google's attractively austere search page, but it's there, nonetheless.

All these "hidden" features are what makes Google so interesting, at least to me, and are why I wrote this book. I wanted to show other users all the cool and useful stuff I've discovered in the Google family of sites, and to share some of the tips and tricks I've developed over the years for getting the most out of Google's various products and services.

That's what Googlepedia is—a guide to everything that Google has to offer. It's not just web search (although I cover that, in much depth); Googlepedia also covers Gmail and Google Maps and Picasa and every other application and service that has come out of Google's headquarters—as well as services that Google acquired along the way, such as Blogger and YouTube. There's plenty of how-to information, of course, but also a lot of tricks and advice that even the most experienced user will appreciate.

I should note, however, that although I know a lot about what Google does and how it works, I'm not a Google insider. I don't work for Google, and had no official contact with Google while writing this book. That means I don't always take the company line; I'll tell you, as honestly as possible, when Google gets it right, when Google needs improvement, and when Google just plain sucks. (The company isn't perfect.) I'm not obligated to put on a positive face, which means you'll get the straight poop, good or bad.

What's in This Book

Google isn't just web search; the company offers a lot of different products and services, all of which I discuss somewhere in this book. Because of everything that Google does, this is a long book—46 chapters in all, organized into 10 major sections:

• Part I: Getting to Know Google provides an inside look at Google (the company and the technology), and then shows you how to use Google's various tools to personalize your computing and web browsing experience.

• Part II: Searching with Google is all about what Google does best—search for information. You'll learn the best ways to use Google's famous web search, as well as when to use Google's other more- targeted search services.

• Part III: Communicating with Google shows you why Google isn't just about search; we'll discuss emailing with Gmail, instant messaging with Google Talk, blogging with Blogger, and virtual chatting with Lively.

• Part IV: Working with Google Applications presents Google's web-based applications, including Google Docs, Google Spreadsheets, Google Presentations, Google Calendar, and Google Reader.

• Part V: Viewing Images and Videos is all about pictures and videos, courtesy of Google Images and the uber-popular YouTube video- sharing site.

• Part VI: Working with Google Maps is all about Google Maps, Google Earth, and creating your own Google Maps mashups.

• Part VII: Using Other Google Services discusses a wide variety of useful and information-rich services, including Google News, Google Finance, Google Health, Google Checkout, and Google Sites.

• Part VIII: Using Google on the Go is all about using Google on your mobile phone—including the Apple iPhone and the upcoming Android Google phone.

• Part IX: Making Money with Google shows you how to optimize your website for Google search, advertise your site with Google AdWords, and put advertising on your site with Google AdSense.

• Part X: Google for Web Developers discusses Google's tools for developers and businesses, including how to add Google to your website, analyze your site traffic, develop applications with Google's APIs and developer tools, create Google Gadgets, create OpenSocial gadgets, and take your web-based applications offline with Google Gears.

There are also two appendixes that present useful reference information, and a third that covers one of Google's most exciting new applications. Appendix A is the Google Site Directory (a complete listing of URLs for all of Google's websites), while Appendix B lists Google's advanced search operators. Handy references, both of them. And Appendix C covers Chrome, Google's very own web browser, the one that has everyone in the industry talking.

If you're wondering what's new in this third edition, the answer is "a lot." That's because the Googleverse is constantly changing; not a week goes by without some new feature being added or some old function being improved upon. To name just a few examples of new features covered in this edition that weren't around when the last edition was published, one needs to look no further than Google Knol, Google Health, Google Presentations, Google Sky, Google Sites, Google's iPhone applications, the Google phone, Lively, the OpenSocial API, and the Chrome web browser. And that's just the new stuff from Google; I've updated all the coverage in the book to reflect Google's current status quo and beefed up the coverage of Google's developer's tools.

Who Can Use This Book

Googlepedia can be used by any level of user; you don't have to be a search expert or application developer to find something of value within these pages. That said, I think this book has particular appeal to more experienced or interested users, as a lot of advanced features are presented. Still, even if you've never used Google (or Gmail or Google Maps or whatever) before, you'll find a lot of useful information here.

How to Use This Book

I hope that this book is easy enough to read that you don't need instructions. That said, there are a few elements that bear explaining.

First, there are several special elements in this book, presented in what we in the publishing business call "margin notes." There are different types of margin notes for different types of information, as you see here.

Note - This is a note that presents information of interest, even if it isn't wholly relevant to the discussion in the main text.

Tip - This is a tip that might prove to be useful for whatever it is you're in the process of doing.

Caution - This is a caution that something you might accidentally do might have undesirable results.

In most chapters, you'll also find some personal commentary, presented in the form of a sidebar. These sections are meant to be read separately, as they exist "outside" the main text. And remember—these sidebars are my opinions only, so feel free to agree or disagree as you like.

Obviously, there are lots of web page addresses in the book, like this one: http://www.google.com. When you see one of these addresses (also known as a URL), you can go to that web page by entering the URL into the address box in your web browser. I've made every effort to ensure the accuracy of the Web addresses presented here, but given the ever-changing nature of the web, don't be surprised if you run across an address or two that's changed. I apologize in advance.

The other thing you'll find in various places throughout this book is HTML code. A snippet of code might look like this:

When part of the code is italics (such as the URL in the previous example), this means that you need to replace the italicized code with your own individual information. In the previous example, you would replace URL with the full URL and filename of an image file you want to include in your auction template.

If you're a web page developer, you'll know what to do with this code. If you're not, you might want to skip over those sections. (You don't have to be a developer to use Google, of course.)

Antidote to Google Burnout

As webweaver and search optimizer for my company, I'm always on Internet information overload. There's a lot to be said for any book that gives me ready access to the many topics I need to access only occasionally, as well as the many others I didn't even know I needed to know about. This book excels at taking you into the confusing fine points of using Google. Blogger tags vs. HTML? I finally got it. Self-hosting your blog? Got that, too. The subtleties of sitemaps ... at last! Yes, with a great deal of effort and eye strain you could find much of this information on Google itself. I, for one, am happy to have so much information compiled and printed next to my workstation and to have the author's knowing voice guide me over the speed bumps. A good investment because of the hours of searching it saved me, though probably doomed to a short shelf life. I only wish the book came with an update feature ...

Comprehensive and High-Level Bird's Eye View

Comprehensive and High-Level Bird's Eye View of an impossibly huge collection of:
* Basic, Specialized Searches, and Additional Features,
* Shopping and Product Searches,
* Maps and Directions, Communication Services,
* Multimedia,
* Other Services,
* Google Software Tools,
* Google for Business and Developers,
* Into the future,

This is an impressive work of trying to summarize (even though it took 800 pages) of an impossible huge number Services and Products that are offered by Google. Some of these are totally disjoint, and some really related and extensions of each others.

This is an excellent comprehensive Reference Book to have next to your computer. I was very pleasantly surprised by many things, for example:
* Searching for Financial, University, Technical, and Government information,
* Google alerts and Updates, Making Google Safe for Kids, and other Languages and Translation Capabilities,
* I refined my ability to use to use Maps and Directions,
* I was impressed with Google Answers and Book Search, Tools for desktop, Calendar, and Google Pack,
* Was really happy to find Picasa, which is good image processing Application,
* Found out things about Google Labs, and found the Advanced Search Operators to be extremely helpful for navigation into the book and understanding of it.

Again, as one of the Google Mottos, Michael Miller has made the Impossible, Possible with this book. And not only he has done "No Evil", he has done an excellent job.

Very useful book

I tip-toed into google via Picassa and shortly realized that there is so much to Google that I had to get a book. Found this at the library and decided to buy it. I probably could have googled all this stuff and found it on the computer, but having a book next to me made me excursions into the huge world of Google much easier.

A thorough introduction, but hard to swallow

This was my first book on go. There's no question that it has all the information anyone could ever need to get started playing what I consider the greatest game in the world. However, for most Westerners, the material is very difficult to digest. I believe there are a couple of reasons for this: first, remember that this is one of the top players of the last century, writing a book for beginners. He's lost some of the appreciation for the hefty learning curve the game imposes on the uninitiated. It can be discouraging when he tells you how "easy" some of this stuff is (which, of course, is true once you understand it, but not at first). Second, as some have noted, the book is "concise." I might go a step further and call it "dense." I like this quality in books I read now (as a better player), but as a beginner, it was tough. Third, Iwamoto takes a bottom-up approach, which probably works for some, but left me missing the forest for the trees. A section typically begins with an example (board diagram), and says "In this situation, White needs to play at X, or Black will capture three stones at Y." The principles behind the examples tend to be glossed over, and without a background in the game, I had no idea how to generalize.
Eventually, I did in fact absorb all this material, even without a mentor to help my play along. With the benefit of hindsight, however, I find Janice Kim's "Learn To Play Go" series much, much easier to digest at the beginner level. True, Iwamoto covers in one book what Kim covers in four, but the first two suffice to get you rolling without banging your head against the wall (important if we're going to spread the GOspel throughout the West).

best available introduction

I am only a beginning Go player, but I have ransacked the bookstore shelves for a solid introduction to the game, and this work is by far the best.
Part I provides an amazingly clear explanation of the rules. Part II explains the basic strategy and tactics necessary to play an opponent and understand what you are doing. The only serious alternative, Janice Kim's series of volumes, moves at a snail's pace ideal for people unused to playing other strategy games (for example, chess). Although Kaoru Iwamoto wrote this book in the 1970's, it has the look and feel of a work written in the 1990's. You will be captivated and inspired to pursue the game further.
Incidentally, beginners in search of Go opponents should take advantage of the free real-time services on the Internet. You can watch games between world-class players or challenge any of hundreds of ranked opponents. Along with buying this book, I recommend visiting IGS Panda Net, registering yourself, and downloading gGo and GNU Go.

A Superb Intro to the World�s Oldest Game - David Bronczyk

Since learning the essentials of Go in 1978, I've read two exceptional books for beginners: this one by Iwamoto, and "Go: A Guide to the Game" by D.B. Pritchard (an out-of-print book published by Stackpole Books in 1973). Both books give the neophyte a glimpse into the game's unmatched strategic and tactical subtlety - far greater than that of chess - and its storied past, and both build a solid foundation for developing true mastery. Iwamoto's scheme of organization is excellent, and the sequencing of the basic elements is very logical. I needed several readings in order to digest all the densely packed concepts and examples, but I persisted, reminding myself that it would be unrealistic to expect easy and early prowess in such a deceptively simple "children's" game. I would recommend that a would-be Go player read this book while playing (i.e., freely experimenting and improvising) with computer Go - David Fotland's "The Many Faces of Go" is an outstanding and user-friendly software package.

Nicely done, and very readable.

Paul Kriwaczek could orchestrate the flow of information like few others. I supposed I've read everything of his by now, and I can say that pretty much anything he ever wrote is an exceedingly comfortable read, this book being no exception.

Kriwaczek produced an outstanding computer instructional documentary series for the BBC in the early 1980s called The Computer Programme that set the trend for several more such documentaries to follow. That, coupled with my enjoyment of his non-fiction books on the prophet Zarathustra, the greater history of Babylon, and the history of Yiddish civilization, inspired me to get this book also, and I was not disappointed.

Good basic book for the beginner. I caution that it is somewhat dated in a few areas. Was first published in 1998. Camera angles, lighting and a lot of basic stuff may never change. Happy I own it.

About the Author

John Pinel, the author of Biopsychology, obtained his PhD from McGill University in Montreal. He worked briefly at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology before taking up his current position at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. Professor Pinel is an award-winning teacher and the author of over 200 scientific papers; however, he feels that Biopsychology is his major career-related accomplishment. “It ties together everything that I love about my job: students, teaching, writing, and research.”

 

When asked about his personal interests, Professor Pinel speaks glowingly of his partner, Maggie, and son, Greg. The high quality of the illustrations in Biopsychology is largely attributable to the effort and talents of Maggie, who is an artist and technical writer. Greg is currently completing his PhD at the London School of Economics, specializing in social and educational programs for indigenous peoples.

 

“I get most of my exercise by rehearsing and performing West African drum rhythms,” Professor Pinel says. “For a peak mental and physical experience, a bit of Kpanlogo with my friend, Nigerian drum master Kwasi Iruoje is hard to beat.” Most of Professor Pinel’s relaxation comes from cuddling his cats, Sambala, Rastaman, and Squeak.

Great Accompaniment

I purchased this book as a companion to John P. J. Pinel's Biopsycholgoy (8th edition) for a class. This workbook was not required, but I found it very helpful for two reasons:

1. I have never taken a class involving neuroscience of any kind, and I knew that these concepts would be difficult for me to fully understand. This workbook broke down the parts of the human nervous system in a way that made it simple and straightforward.
2. I found it exceedingly comforting and relaxing to simply color. I enjoyed choosing what colors to use, shading in the appropriate shapes, while simultaneously learning. This subject matter can be intimidating for some, and stressful for others, and the act of coloring removes some of these boundaries.

The workbook also acts as a study guide...there is a back flap that is designed to cover over the names of the structures, and you can go back and test yourself without peeking. The facing page of each coloring diagram includes a brief overview of the specific elements you are coloring and how they relate to one another. These descriptions are very brief summaries which provide a good reinforcement of what you learned from whatever textbook you are using (assuming you are in a class on biopsychology, neuropsychology, or a biology class about the nervous system).

I would recommend this book to anyone who feels that they need some extra help in understanding the complex structures of the human nervous system.

This is a good book for someone who knows next to nothing about neuroanatomy but if you have at least a basic working knowledge of the brain then this book is not for you. I'd suggest going for the popular competitor. I'm a Neuroscience Undergrad and wanted a simple neuroanatomy coloring book to pass the time and seal in anatomical structures but this book was overly simplistic. I ordered the competitor and am much happier with that purchase. HOWEVER, if you are new to the world of neuroanatomy I think this book will be a solid buy - it gives clear descriptions and the drawings are not complicated. It is for that reason I give it 4 stars. It would be 5 but some of the enlargements for the pictures looked distorted which made the book seem "cheap", other than that, for a neuroanatomy novice/beginner - this is a good book, but if you have already learned a thing or two about the brain, go with the competitor.

Great balance between education and fun with coloring.

I bought this as a gift to my adult daughter. She had requested it as it's both educational and fun. She tells me she likes that there are some aspects of this book that get into psychology. She can also appreciate the many drawings that she can color when she just needs a break from the educational. The paper feels like it's high quality. What I did read was written at a level I could understand. I have no medical expertise. Based on what I've seen and felt myself along with her comments to me...I can recommend this book.

War Begins

While The Walking Dead continues to impress, this particular volume, while keeping with the tone of the rest of the volumes, doesn't necessarily bring anything new or surprising to the table. War has started with Negan, who is a different sort of twisted compared to the Governor, but not so much different that he feels anywhere near as compelling or reviled, despite the fact that he is, in some ways, even more diabolical. There just isn't as much to make this issue emotionally compelling from my perspective, though I suspect that part two of All Out War may have more of a long term impact.
I suppose part of it is the fact that Rick and his close nit friends and family have already been pretty much torn to shreds by all the things they have faced in the past. Despite this being the 'biggest' battle they have faced thus far, it seems more routine given everything that has befallen Rick, Carl, Michonne, and Andrea in the past. Hopefully, part two will provide something new and exciting to latch on to going forward.

brutal and very realistic to what it would be like trying to survive in a world like that

I started reading the comics after I learned the TV series was based on the comics series. While there are some similarities, the TV series is very different from the comics. This is definitely an adult comics series. It is very graphic, brutal and very realistic to what it would be like trying to survive in a world like that. There's a lot of profanity; which gets on my nerves, but sadly so many ppl feel the need to talk like that; however; the plot keeps me interested and I look past it. Many of our loved ones and friends just wouldn't make it and the comic series realistically reveals this. Not sure if I will look at the TV series the same; but at the same time I would not watch the TV series if it were just like the comics.Why would I buy the comic series if it were the same as the TV series. I am anxiously awaiting the Walking Dead Volume 21: All Out War Part 2 and the other volumes to follow.

Life After the Zombie Apocalypse is Nasty, Brutish, and Short

I’ll start this review the same way I started my review of Volume 19—WOW. After a weak stretch post-prison, The Walking Dead is firmly back on track with the Alexandria Safe-Zone/Negan storyline. The battle lines have been set and, as the title suggests, an all-out war starts between Negan’s faction and the Alexandria Safe-Zone and its allies. Don’t let the Part 1 stop you (although at this point Part 2 has been out for a while): Vol. 20 ends on one hell of a climax AND cliffhanger (too often we get the latter without the former).

Fantastic Choice for Board Review

I completed my examination on 4/11/13 and can safely say that this review book was fantastic - covering the breadth and depth for topics on the examination very well. This was my sole resource for studying (aside from looking up specific topics that were brought to my attention in the book which I wanted to know more about and a review of ALSO) and I feel very good about that decision.

I've used Swanson and Core Content in the past, but this was much better, and included information which will change my practice. My background: practice inpatient, outpatient and maternity care and teach at a medical school/residency. Years experience: 10. # boards taken so far: 2.

My advice:
1. Study topics in order of the % of the examination (Respiratory, then Cardiac, etc.)
2. Take hand written notes while working through the book.
3. Review hand written notes every 3 chapters - for me, the act of writing things out cements it in my head.

Areas on which I wished I had spent a little more time: ID, Vaccinations, Neuro. Only other note is that this book was published in 2012, so as we move farther out from then, see if they have an update. My hope is that they will update online and make hard copy updates every 2-3 years. Good luck!

Excellent book!

I just took my recert. My practice is rural, strictly outpatient, no OB, about 5% peds. This book helped a lot. Would highly recommend this book. I only wish that I went through this book couple of times instead of wasting almost 1000 dollars on review prep which was such a waste of time and money. Absolute waste of time.

My opinion: this book is all that you need. Go through it couple of times paying attention to the helpful tips box. It really helped a lot. And pay particular attention to the explanation of wrong answers. Also if you are AAFP member, definitely do the board review questions.

Good for review for boards, in general, and I didn't fall asleep reading it.

I bought the kindle version which is a good format for this text. I originally bought Bratton's but tried out the kindle version of this and didn't even touch bratton's after that because the content was so good, and the humor actually helped. The text format includes a case question and the answers immediately following. It then goes over not only the correct answer, but why the other options were incorrect. This is lacking in a lot of review texts (Bratton's, Pretest). I prefer the "one question followed by answer" format compared to Swanson's where you take a short run of questions in one section without immediate answers. Maybe that's just my impatient personality, but it works for the kindle for this book. The Kindle version of Swanson's I tried but you have to flip each page back and forth, it didn't work for me. They also have charts intermixed to review comparisons that would otherwise take forever to describe. This book as of today is surprisingly up to date. I hope they keep this up because a lot of review books will do their first version, then put a new cover on it and reprint it as the "newest edition" without updating the content ("cough-First-Aid").

The humor is definitely a bonus because it keeps me awake, is not too cheesy, and is essentially the same as anyone's inner monologue when they see a particular patient. For instance, the toothless patient asking which of these two new inhalers you prescribed will keep him alive if he can't afford both? I had a patient like that 2 weeks ago, minus the toothless part, (but he was missing a foot).

What I also like about the kindle version in general is I can make highlights of correct statements, then go to a summary screen and review all the highlights I made in the text by themselves on a separate page for review. It also mentions (in case you zone out) sentences that other people have highlighted (which made me feel good about myself if I already knew it).

The only negatives I have are actually not entirely negative. This text his hecka long. Took me more than a month just to get through it. Another negative, which is a negative for me was I felt like I was learning things I didn't really get the first time around, which isn't ideal for a review book. This is definitely in-depth enough for review for family medicine, about the best you can do for such a broad topic, and most entertaining.

This was one of the best series I have ever read. I was not happy when I was nearing the end of the story because I did not want it to end. But I was oh so glad I had another story in the series to read. This story was very different from any other series I have ever read. The story was well written without being confusing even though the story line encompassed many other planets and aliens, everything was kept at a level that was easy to follow and remember from story to story. The females are strong females, they are either alpha's from the start of the story or turn into alpha's by the end of the stories. But, I wish there would of been more of the females holding there own in the beginning of each relationship instead of giving in to the men with in a few short pages. I was very upset that the series came to an end but Alien Interludes was a great book that I was able to put questions to rest about what happened to certain characters. This series is a MUST read! AND the Kindle books are FULL books.

Cops and a "bad" girl. Oh yeah!

I really like the Clans of Kalquor, I have read most of them and this one adds something I haven't seen in a while, a heroine that is not as level headed. It is refreshing to see someone with qualities of a real girl without the religious indoctrination, and as always, the kalquorian patience shows. The action is great, felt like I was watching a film.

Not as good as the others.

I usually love this series, this one didn't seem to satisfy me as much as the others.
Something about it just seemed off. Maybe it was Dani, I couldn't seem to quite connect to her as I had to the others.
I finished it but I really had to push myself and I was just going through the motions.Maybe it was my mood,I don't like that I didn't groove on this book, it makes me sad. This was one of my favourite series, this book let it down for me
