Drawn largely from the autobiography of Babur, the first Moghul emperor, this first of five planned novels about the Moghul empire is heavier on history than plot. The story begins in 1494, when Babur is 12 years old, and moves through the next 36 years, until his death. Babur is a descendant of Timur (Tamerlane to Westerners), a youth suddenly thrust onto a throne that he must defend against traitors and invaders, resulting in a quick education in leadership, torture, deception, merciless warfare, and unbelievable brutality. Babur's lust for power and glory lead him into vicious battles and deadly court intrigues where cruelty, treachery, destruction, and slaughter occur every day. The plot is thin, however, serving as a loose framework for Rutherford's exciting history lesson. About the Author
Alex Rutherford is the pen name of Diana Preston and her husband, Michael, whose nonfiction has been awarded the Los Angeles Times Science and Technology Prize and been praised worldwide. Between them, they have written seven books, including Cleopatra and Antony, Taj Mahal, and Before the Fallout. They live in London. Simon Vance, a former BBC Radio presenter and newsreader, is a full-time actor who has appeared on both stage and television. He has recorded over four hundred audiobooks and has earned over twenty Earphones Awards from AudioFile magazine, including one for his narration of Theft by Peter Carey. Baburnama retold

Much has been written about the Mughal dynasty and it's impact on India. Alex Rutherford does a great job bringing it to light with a fantastic rebelling. Clearly, given the absence of all information, there are some leaps of faith required and made by the author but none that deviates from seemingly the truth or an approximation thereof.

As a curious student of the subject of Mughal dynasty I found this to be a fantastic read and highly recommend it.

Brillianr narrative style but questionable authenticity of content

Captivating narration - brought vivid images to life. Recreated history brilliantly. But having read some other stuff about the Mughal emperors, I felt the authors did tamper with some real events in the name of creative liberty. I didn't like how they glossed over Babur's relation with Baburi. That one deliberate change in how the relationship is portrayed made me question the authenticity of most projected in the book. I read it as a work of fiction with brilliant narration to enjoy and not as a work of history to learn from.

spellbinding history

The writing style may be a little sophomoric but the subject matter is spellbinding. And the author does capture some of the grand sweep of the central Asian landscape along with the history. Rutherford, in spite of the writing, does provide a very interesting sketch of Babur's character. I do not know how faithful he is to Baburnama. However, this is good historical fiction.

Fluff much?

I hope you like reading the same fluff over and over again, because that's what you're getting here. Giant book that is filled with information that should only use 1/3 of the book, IF that. Not only is it filled with massive fluff, but this book contradicts itself everywhere, even within the same paragraph.

Full of worthless fluff

The book is full of FLUFF! It is constantly repeating itself and giving worthless statistics. About 1/4 of the information in the book is need to know. The online NCLEX questions that come with the book are great for the professors who use the books test bank for their tests. I've seen multiple NCLEX questions on my exams in class that were on their web site.

As most everyone buying this, you're probably in nursing school. This is the text for the program I am in. First note, be prepared to devote a decent amount of your time on this text. Like others have mentioned, it is very thorough but that also comes with lots of material and some repetition. Probably a harder read that my med-surg book which is not a positive attribute. Smaller text; each page is loaded with info. Organization wise, not the most planned out textbook I've had but not the worst; pretty much on par with your average text.

Great Instructional Resource For Professionals

A really excellent resource for professionals who want an inside look at the creative process of these two fantasy masters. I'm not sure why some people were critical of this book in their reviews? If you have any background in painting and drawing you should be able to fill in the how-to blanks of a painting development without a complete step-by-step coloring book tutorial! This is not a how-to for the novice artist, but certainly anyone can learn from this book.

Better than there first

This book I feel was much better than there first tutorial book, "Fantasy Art Techniques". That book left me with a lot of questions. But this one, was great. I am sure they get asked numerous questions by students and onlookers concerning the best technique. Everyone, like myself, looks for a cookie cutter method but when it comes to oil you have to come into your own. I notice there basic advice throughout the book is to just practice. I understand what that really means now. You have to learn through trial and error what works and what does not. Your own mistakes will be your lessons. But saying that, they still provide some great techniques for one to study and use.

Actually Dan Santos suggested this book for me after I was asking him some questions about Boris and Julie's style. I am glad he suggested this book.

Good advice from excellent artists

I've been entralled by Boris and Julie's book covers for many years. Fixated by their figures, fantasy creatures, and supernatural landscapes, I couldn't even imagine painting figures in such detail. What a surprize to find this book! This isn't your usual art instruction book. Rather, it's a well organized dialog with two of the most talented and accomplished artists of their genre. They share a considerable amount of advice and details about techniques, style, composition, and more for painters of all levels. It inspired me to take the plunge and try my hand at realistic portrait and figure painting, and by following the methods outlined and demonstrated in this book, I've been been pleasantly surprized with the results. Since then, I've acquired a substantial library of books by other authors, but I find myself returning to this and others by Boris and Julie, especiallyFantasy Art Techniques for reference and inspiration.

A compilation of road tests from magazines around the world. Very interesting to read diverse takes on our favorite little sports car, the NA Miata. Could be indexed a little better, and the pictures show a surprising amount of generational detail loss, but all in all a great source of historical performance data.

There are two editions of this book!

Just a note of caution:
Notice that the title Amazon lists for this book is "Mazda Miata Mx-5: Performance Portfolio 1989-1996", but the cover reads "Mazda Miata Mx-5: Performance Portfolio 1989-1997" (the difference is in the dates that are covered). There are two editions of this book, and they do have slight, but significant, differences in the contents. Although both editions are the same size (by page count), the 1997 edition adds an article or two, and deletes others. I have the 1989-96 version, and I have enjoyed reading it, but I can't help but wonder what I have been missing!

not just finding the answer on a multiple choice sheet like the AP classes she previously had taken

I'm a parent and bought this book because my kid was struggling to transition to the IB way of testing i.e. not just finding the answer on a multiple choice sheet like the AP classes she previously had taken. Her first quiz in IB Bio HL she got a 50!

I bought this book for her and she loved the concise way the information is summarized and felt it really helped supplement what they were learning in class. She put in a lot of time and effort and made a 100 on her next quiz and a 96 on her first unit test. So I would say this is a very helpful book.

Great introduction into Philosophy for newbies and the "phi-curious".

Soooooo, I'm not an academic. Somehow I managed to get three college degrees without ever taking a Philosophy course because, well, frankly, I just wasn't interested. Fast forward 20 years -- why is this now my FAVORITE book? After 8 years of college and 5 years in public policy, reading for pleasure was all but a distant memory. Learning the principles and concepts in this book -- in bite sized pieces that's not overwhelming -- is just what I needed to get my intellectual curiosity stimulated again. Once I get through the entire book, I'll probably read a couple of more detailed books on subjects that I found the most interesting.

Plato's Cave? Tripartite beings? Yep, I'm all about it.

Succinct, engaging intro to Philosophy

This book gives a great introduction to the basic problems of philosophy and the people who have provided solutions. The strength of this book lies in its succinct exposition. Each chapter is no more than a few pages. This helps to keep the reader engaged with the material. Minutiae is avoided, and only the essential information is presented on each person or topic. I was so pleased with this book that I bought and am currently reading Kleinman's Psychology 101.

There were a few topics missing that I wished were there, and I think Mr. Kleinman almost OVER-simplified some of the topics discussed. But, overall, I really enjoyed reading this cover-to-cover. Really great job of taking some complex ideas and breaking them down into digestible parts.
