About the Author

MASUJI IBUSE was born in Kamo, Hiroshima Prefecture, in 1898. He majored in French at Waseda University and joined the School of Fine Arts to pursue a serious interest in painting. His first story, "Salamander," was published in 1923, when Ibuse was still a student, and by the early 1930s his eloquent use of dialect and his unique prose style had established him as one of the leading figures in the Japanese literary world. In the years since 1938 he has been awarded almost every literary prize in Japan, and on the publication of Black Rain (1966) Ibuse was presented with both the Cultural Medal and Japan's highest literary award, the Noma Prize. Black Rain has been translated into eleven foreign languages.

Phenomenology of destruction

Every once in a while I find a book that surprises me.
I had bought Ibuse's Black Rain upon recommendation from the remarkable Kenzaburo Oe. I expected something like a documentary novel about Hiroshima, maybe like John Hersey's book about that subject.

What I found is a unique work of art on top of the documentary. We have here a complete tale of life in war before the bomb and in peace after the bomb. Not to forget the transition phase of uncertainty and disorientation.
The narration is set a few years after August 6, 1945. A family of survivors lives a simple life of daily routines and remembrances. The man in the house had written a diary on the day of the bomb and the following days. He copies the original text and adds further memories. He asks his wife to add a text on food during the war. The act of writing is as much a subject as the act of living in the presence and remembering the life of the past. The writing is done for the sake of a local library which had asked for it.

The real focus of human interest is not the mass killing. We can't be moved, really, by hundreds of thousands. We need individuals. We have the small family of 3. We have Yasuko, the main man's niece, who lives with uncle and aunt, and has lived there during the bombing. She is young and attractive and suspect. Does she have radiation disease? Can she bear a son? Can one marry her? The uncle's heart is near breaking point. Nobody knows the truth. Rumors have the girl at totally wrong places, but knowledge of the right places would not guarantee health.

The novel delves into amazing detail. It is a cook book for famine times. It gives recipes for aquaculture under monopoly administration. It tells us how a man with radiation sickness can spend his time productively without overexertion.
The diary describes the phenomena of the bomb's effects (the clouds, the light, the fires, the injuries, the corpses, the decomposition etc) with attention to much detail, but with total ignorance about the kind of weapon that has been used. Hindsight does not blur this. This uncertainty is a main driver of the tale.
We learn about conflicts between bureaucracy, military and civilians. We watch the total collapse of organization after the bomb, but we see no descent into barbarity by the survivors. Decency and civility are maintained. Well, apart from some minor transgressions like theft of provisions. And yet: it takes a century, thinks the narrator, to repair the moral damage done to the population in an area badly ravaged by war.
(This simple truth seems easily forgotten by contemporary invaders of foreign countries.)

What to do with corpses of people who die of their injuries and diseases after the bomb? Death certificates? Burials? Our narrator gets conscripted as temporary scripture reader at funerals. He learns to appreciate the Buddhist texts that have been given to him by a monk for the purpose. He memorizes the Sermon on Mortality.

A superb early scene: on the morning of the bomb, help units are dispatched into town; the headman sees them off with patriotic bombast about spirit of war and keeping their bamboo spears as symbols; on the way, they make a lunch break at a farm house; during the break they hear a speech on the radio, We do not learn what the speech is, but the men drop their spears when they continue their march.

How can a book with this subject avoid melodrama, monotony, sentimentality, and all the other pitfalls of the subject? That's what the translator asks in his introduction.
Good question. Ibuse did it. The tone and sense of humor is the greatest surprise in this book. A miracle of counter-intuitive writing.

Kindle version of Black Rain

This is the most beautiful and most sad thing I've ever read. I literally had no idea.

Thankfully, the author does not preach about the evils of what happened. Rather, Black Rain simply describes what it was like for a few of the survivors of Hiroshima. It includes the events of that black day in 1945, but also talks about what happened to the people next; how their lives were effected by the radiation sickness and even worse. The stigma of being at Hiroshima ruined their future. You would think they had suffered enough without the addition of such harmful gossip from their fellow countrymen.

It's very hard to see where the lines between fiction and non-fiction are in this book, but to me, that's what makes it so great.

The kindle version has an interactive table of contents, and one can easily navigate between the chapters using the 5-way controller.

This was a book that didn't want to make me vomit really, I couldn't envision a lot of the things like I usually do when I read books, but I think I was sub consciously trying not to as this was a touchy topic for me. It took me tree days to finish this book I think because I kept looking for things regarding the bombings and getting into debates whether or not it was true, etc; I really liked this book, made me cry especially when children were mentioned, I wish I knew what happened with Yasuko, the ending SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER made it seem as if she died, so left to my imaginative devices I just kept her alive. Great book Masuji-dono.

Vampire's Shade (1 of series)

I downloaded Vampire's Shade as a free book from Amazon. I had a love-hate relationship with this read. Part of it due to the cover which makes no sense with the plot-- what's with those wings and holey tights?

For some reason, Adele's personality, speech, and sayings reminded me of other young, vampire-slayer characters-- all attitude and self-reflection. I'll admit, I enjoyed the plot, and secondary characters, even if I found the protagonists unremarkable. The story was well-paced, and thoughtful. I think my dislike is the cookie-cutter heroine-- a compilation of other, similar vampire-slayers. I can't say I was too impressed with Connor, either. Nor did I ever really get a sense of the attraction between the two. Their relationship seemed contrived, rather than a natural progression of events.

There's a lot of potential here, and I'm willing to bet this is a series that will improve as the writer hits her stride with the characters.

New Editor Makes All the Difference

If I chose books based on cover photos, I'd never have downloaded Vampire's Shade. Could it be any cheesier? It looks like they're trying to hook hormonal high school boys.

This story is riddled with errors, more than I've seen in a long time, which is a real shame. I found myself constantly backtracking to try to deduce the author's meaning because of odd phrasing (ex: "It hadn't been a hell of a job, and there'd always been a little torn."), missing words and punctuation, and misused words. Clearly, this book wasn't edited before publication and it shows. Errors show up on every other page. Some people don't care about this stuff, and don't even notice it. It was a real problem for me. 2 stars as is.

For content only, Vampire's Shade deserves 3.5 stars, perhaps 4 stars. The story is involving and the characters were interesting. Parts of the plot could have been fleshed out more. We got only bare details about Connor's illegal business or why the master vampires wanted it. Since that was pivotal, more about that would have been helpful.

Neas may not be Jeaniene Frost or Laurell K. Hamilton, but her writing is very promising. I really hope she finds a good editor. I'd love to revise my review after editing.

p.s. I just looked at the listing, and amazingly, this book lists an editor. Unbelievable. They should be fired. And she should demand a refund.

ETA 6-8-16: I was just notified that this was re-edited, so I downloaded it again to take another look. What a difference a good editor makes! In the first chapter, I only noticed one misspelled word, one or two missing words, and one slightly awkward turn of phrase. Trust me, that's nothing compared to the original release. The story now has the polish it deserves, and it flows like it should. If you have the original, download the new one and compare. It's impressive.

3.5 stars, rounded up to 4, because hey, the author responded and acted. Thanks on behalf of all of us.

What's a dead vampire or two.

There were a lot of mistakes in this book and some sentences were completely baffling with wording, some words were missing or spelled wrong and it was really hard to figure out what the author meant. The story itself was very interesting and intriguing so overall I thought it was a really great book if you can overlook the mistakes. I hope that someone proof reads the next book as I think Vivienne Neas has a talent for writing. I always give first time writers second chances especially when I see greatness to entertain readers like this author.

Avec les enfants, j'ai joué au jeu roi du bidonville, le cerf-volant, fait de pauvres morceaux de carton et de tissus qui emportent par-dessus la grisaille des toits tous les rêves de ce peuple d'emmurés. J'ai participé aux naissances, aux mariages, aux crémations, aux fêtes des hindous, des musulmans, des sikhs, des chrétiens et de toutes les communautés de cette mosaïque de peuples et de religions. J'ai tiré des rickshaws et roulé des "bidi' dans les ateliers-bagnes où des enfants de six et sept ans confectionnent plus de douze cents cigarettes par jour. J'ai fait la queue entre minuit et trois heures du matin pour aller aux latrines (il y a une latrines pour 2500 habitants) et j'ai appris à me laver de la tête aux pieds avec moins d'un demi-litre d'eau. About the Author
About the Author JEAN-PIERRE HOURDEBAIGT is a Registered Massage Therapist. Originally from France, Hourdebaigt moved to Canada in 1981, where he continued a generations-old family practice of natural healing. After graduating from the Canadian College of Massage and Hydrotherapy, he pursued a successful career treating many well-known athletes and dignitaries. It was his passion for animals, however, that lead him to educate animal lovers in the art and therapeutic application of massage techniques to help their horses, cats and dogs. For many years he has worked on horses of all breeds and in all disciplines. With only two hands and so many horses to help, he created workshops in equine massage (preventative, maintenance, recovery and post-surgery) to instruct owners and riders. He wrote Equine Massage to reach a wider audience beyond those who come to study with him in Ottawa, Canada.

Clear, well written and well illustrated

I already had a few basic massage techniques from my equine physio and this book is exactly what I wanted to further my knowledge.

The beginning of the book includes a series of clear detailed anatomical pictures. One of the final sections looks at the kinesiology of the horse and common injuries, stress points and problems for various sporting disciplines.

Each technique is then described and shown. Practical hints such as using your bathroom scales to work out what 'X'lbs of pressure feels like, abound.

To make the book even better there are then sections which describe what various 'routines' might be made up of (relaxation for instance) and how long to spend etc. There are also recommendations for how to start with a new horse, body signals to look for and when you may need a helper.

A marvelous book for any horse owner or lover...

This is a great book. It is filled with excellent charts and illustrations, as well as thorough explanations of techniques the average horse owner/lover can use to help create and increase wellness in their horse.
The book covers the following: Anatomy and Physiology of the Horse; The Horse and Massage Therapy; Principles and Concepts of Massage; Hydrotherapy; Massage Techniques and Routines; Kinesiology of the Horse; Stretching; Conformation Check-up Routine; Body Parts and Their Stress Points; Areas of Stress Specific to Each Discipline; Keeping Records.
This book begs to be taken to the stable with you, and the format makes it easy to use there. It is spiral bound, which makes it easy to leave open to a section from which you're working, and the cover is easily wiped off if it gets dirty (not that we ever get dirty at the barn, eh?). All in all this is a marvelous book, don't hesitate to buy it!

I am thoroughly enjoying this book from cover to cover. It covers so much detail, in easy to understand terms, so regardless what level you are with you horse, you can learn something to help you understand and benefit your horse from this book! Along with plain English, the pictures and diagrams are informative but not crowd!
