As a blind buy, but still needing an upper-elementary level book on Archimedes, I was more than happily surprised to see what an absolute gem this book was! Well written, easily understood, yet not too basic, the author weaves and explains scientific and mathematical principles in a story-like form that entranced my homeschooled fifth-grader. This is one he'll want to read over and over--not a book he felt he "had" to read. I highly recommend its purchase.

poor transcribing ruins this classic by a respected author

The transcribing on this was exceptionally poor. Missing punctuation, misplaced punctuation, and inappropriate capitalization are spoiling this classic by a vaunted author. I haven't read it in quite some years, but I know better than to think that this is how Leon Uris used dialect in character portrayal. Now I'm beginning to wonder what might have been left out. I'm really disappointed in this purchase of a piece of literature that I know is better. I don't know who did the transcribing, but if you read this, shame on you.

The theme of this book reminds me of the words of Dylan Thomas," Do not go gentle into that good night...Rage, rage against the dying of the light!"

Against all odds, the Jews in Mila 18 fought against tyranny instead of going willingly to their deaths. More importantly, a journal was written so that this inhumanity to man could never be forgotten!

This book makes one proud to be a Jew! All the survivors during this time lived to tell the incredible tale of rising from their darkest hour into the light. It is important that the descendents of this time tell the story so that this kind of tyranny will never happen again!

It brings the Warsaw Uprising to life

Mila 18 is an epic novel by Leon Uris. Leon painstakingly researched the Warsaw Ghetto and the Uprising and the facts are historically correct. However, he used his imagination as a fiction writer to create the characters and their conversations and movements. Some of the characters are real and were actually in the Ghetto and did what he says they did. Rosenblum, for instance, did write a journal about what was going on in the Ghetto and he did bury writings, diaries, histories, etc. in milk cans and other canisters at various spots in Warsaw. Some were actually retrieved; but some are still lost. This is not a book to be read in one sitting or even two. It is a book to be savored and thought about as you are reading. Although not necessary, knowing something of the history of the Warsaw ghetto, the Uprising, and the Nazis, it does help to understand the actions of the characters better.
In addition to being a story about the ghetto and the uprising, an attempt to understand how different people react to the same circumstances. He shows how and tells why some Jews became collaborators and “betrayed” their own, sometimes even their own families. As it begins before WWII, you see how those who considered themselves not to be Jews were drawn into helping the Nazis. It explains how the Jewish ruling group in the Ghetto came about and how each member dealt with what he had to do.
His book also shows how women were controlled by their husbands and fathers prior to WWII and how that changed as the war continues. Some were forced by circumstances to break out of the mold and become independent young women. Rachael, for example, defied her father by living with Wolf. He refused to allow the marriage by himself and made sure the other Jews knew he did not condone marriage thus leaving them to live together in “sin”. What is interesting is that Rachael does have the consent of her mother to do this. Deborah was in an arranged marriage and found herself basically a slave to her husband. She met Christopher de Monti before the war and had an affair with him. When given a chance to leave the Ghetto with Christopher, she refused and stayed with her children in the Ghetto. Christopher, an Italian by passport, refused to leave since he couldn’t leave Deborah even though he doesn’t see her anymore. Leon Uris delves into changes in social standards as he writes.
The book is very good and very well written. It is another book that brings history to life.

As I continue my study of God's word, it makes my sudy easier to read a simple explaination of all the aspects of the second coming of Jesus Christ. Many students of the Bible often skip prophecy because of the difficulity in understanding and interpretation, but Dr. Willmington makes it simple. I highly recommend this book!

A MUST READ for all Serious Wine Students

I wish you could give 6-stars or a "Classic" rating. This book is to wine texts as The godfather II is to cinema. If you have not ready this book's section on wine tasting then you should not be allowed to make wine, sell wine, nor call yourself a wine expert.

A work of true genius!

This book differed from any other winemaking reference I have encountered. While the text is aging and some of the information is therefore of questionable accuracy (eg: "open top fermenters are losing favor for red wine vinification"), I found these lapses to be mostly in the category of trends in practice and therefore obvious. These minor shortcomings are overwhelmed by the unique viewpoints of a man known rightfully as one of the wine worlds giants. There are brilliant insights into vinification and wine structure in this book that I have encountered nowhere else. Not in other texts, symposia, trade journals or conversations with great winemakers. If you are a professional or serious amateur winemaker, buy this book and read it. Then read it again. Thank you Monsieur Peynaud for this gift.

A Bible for the truly serious wine student

Peynaud's stature in the wine world is legendary. He trained a copule of generations of Bordeaux winemakers, and through his words you can gain insight into classic winemaking and classic beliefs of that major region. The book is highly technical--I ended up reading it twice, to understand it fully. But Peynaud is also a poet, and a philospher, and his language is beautiful. This is a book that you'll refer to for your lifetime--provided that you're really serious about understanding the principles and philosophies behind winemaking.
